Welcome to www.irishastronomy.org. This site is run by IFAS, the Irish Federation of Astronomical Societies. This site is currently in the midst of a major renovation so please bear with us while things are a little messy.
Feel free to ask any question on our Bulletin Boards where we have a wealth of Amateur Astronomers who will hopefully be able to answer your questions. If you're not sure where to begin check out our Beginners Forum. What ever you do don't be afraid to ask questions, no matter how simple you may think they are, there is no such thing as a silly question! You may also be interested in our Observing Challenges program, particularly the beginners challenge.

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) has earmarked 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA2009). The theme for this event is "The Universe, Yours to Discover" which celebrates the 400th anniversairy of Galileo's first astronomical observations with a telescope. This promises to be a truly international celebration of astronomy with outreach programs and events organised right across the globe. IFAS is proud to endorse this program and encourage all astronomy clubs across Ireland to embrace this unique opportunity.
It is with great pleasure that we announce Deirdre Kelleghan as the IFAS Astronomer Of The Year for 2007. Dee is President of the Irish Astronomical Society (IAS) and Public Relations Officer for IFAS. Apart from carrying out these duties, she also holds a tremendous passion for sketching celestial targets with her telescope, which she then shares with us all here on the boards. As if all this wasn't enough, she spends extensive time organising outreach programs explaining the night sky to children in the Dublin & Wicklow area. Without a doubt, a thoroughly deserving winner!
