IFAS 2016 Calendar: competition now open
Entries are now being accepted for the IFAS 2016 Calendar Competition. Closing date is (NOW EXTENDED TO) midnight on Friday September 4th. The 12 highest voted images will be the 12 monthly images for our 2016 calendar, which will be sold to raise funds for IFAS and its continued efforts to promote astronomy and allied subjects. The rules are simple, the conditions attainable, and the imagery - well, that's down to you!
Perseids 2015 - the best in years!
The annual Perseids Meteor Shower peaked on the night of August 12th, and with recent viewing conditions set to be the best in years, primarily due to a complete lack of the Moon in ther nightsky, it would all come down to the weather. And we were not disappointed! From Kerry to Armagh, the midlands to the coasts, Ireland witnessed the best shower for many in well over a decade. Read more in the developed thread here >

Irish Astronomer discovers new variable star
Mike Foylan, and astronomer based at Cherryvalley Observatory here in Ireland (IAU observatory code I83) has discovered a new variable star. Using an 8 inch telescope and camera while attempting light measurements of minor planet 3492 Petra-Pepi, Mike made the discovery in the constellation of Ophiuchus.
