"What does a (space) weather man do?" - Dr. D. Shaun Bloomfield

Our Sun is not the quiet star that it was historically thought to be. The
magnetic field that varies through the solar cycle causes the Sun to send
out eruptions in the form of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, both
of which can impact the technologies we use in day-to-day life. This talk
will outline how space weather affects humanity and how we predict its
occurrence in order to live (essentially) undisturbed inside the Sun's
range of influence.

Dr. Bloomfield is a Senior Research Fellow in solar physics and space
weather at Trinity College Dublin. He has worked on several European Space
Agency (ESA) satellites, such as the ongoing Proba2 space-weather
monitoring mission and the Solar Orbiter mission due for launch in 2017.
His research focuses on predicting the occurrence of solar flares and he
is Deputy-Chair of an ESA Topical Working Group on 'Space Weather
Forecasting'.

"Structures on the surface of the Sun" - Dr. Eamon Scullion

Four centuries ago, Galileo Galilee turned his telescope towards the Sun
and announced to the world that the Sun god also has pimples on his face
(i.e., sunspots). Our ability to observe the Sun and the magnetic field
that causes sunspots to form has increased significantly over the past
century. In this talk I will show the fine detail of structures on the Sun
and their evolution, using real images and movies from ground- and space-
based observatories.
