Madrid, Spain:- rang Paul Tipper (South Dublin A.S.) there and he has had lovely views at the observatory of a work colleague to the north of the city. Some thunderclouds building up so they might miss third contact. Black Drop lasted about three minutes . . . lots of digital images taken which he will have on his return to Ireland.

Amazing picture today on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day site. It shows a closeup of Venus on the edge of the Sun with sunlight refracted through the Venusian atmosphere. :shock:

Just a question I'd like to throw out to all who say the 3rd contact.
Did anyone see the black drop effect as expected, i.e. see venus merging via a dark "bridge" for a minute or so before it was "at" the Suns limb.
What I saw was Venus getting closer and closer to the edge until it finally touched the limb as in the photo below.

The pic above is just as Venus and the Suns limb "joined", before this they were seperate, from my point of view.
I noticed that Conor mentioned earlier that he didnt see what he expected either ??
