Hi Derek,

Welcome to the forum.

Sligo has two problems for observing.
Light pollution and more cloud being near the sea. (Mountains that create oragraphic uplift)

I observe to the south of the Curliew Mountains, Co Sligo, which is an excellent dark site.

I know of another astronomer, whom lives in Sligo, whom also comes out this way
for astrophotography.

Cheers

Well Derek my back yard view is pretty respectable.
it's facing south with a decent east / west aspect also.
On good nights I can see the Milky Way although faint
so I can't complain.
Perfect for most general astronomy.

SAC then have two great observing sites, one in Boher
which is an elevated, wind shielded, private site SE of limerick.
Most of our sessions are held there and we are very lucky to have
the use of it.

The other site we go to is in the Burren.
(the car park next to the Dolmen)
This site is world class except for a pesky neighbor with a
one billion watt security light (although we have plans to make
him an honorary member of SAC soon! :silly: )
and sometimes the wind.
The site is elevated and has a clear 360 degree horizon but this
can be a real issue when the wind picks up.

Greetings all,

Name is Michael and I'm based in Limerick. I've always been interested in astronomy and astrophotography. I've done some basic stuff from my back garden (relatively limited view), but I've just purchased (well it's on order) an LXD75 SN-8 from Andy in North Downs and hope to get more serious about things in the near future. I'm only down the road from Boher, so I hope to join the SAC on an observing session at the next available opportunity.

Mike.

Hi Michael.
Welcome the the IFAS boards.
I heard about the mix up last week from Dave.
Pity you missed it.
I'm sure Dave (our observing director/guru) has explained to you
that we send out the texts to members only although his mobile
is in the committee section of the SAC site and you would have been more than welcome to come along anyway!
Still
great to see another potential club member buying a scope.

I had that same one for a time and it's a grand bit of kit.
If your living near Boher then you must have some good skies to begin with.

Hi Michael and Derek.

Derek, I'm based near Sligo myself. I go to the car park at the foot of Knocknarea to get some dark skies. Where do you observe from?
