That sounds like a good idea, a mobile phone text alert of an
aurora... isn't it a bitch when there's the brightest
red+green+purple+yellow+white+orange+polka dots northern lights,
covering about 55% of the sky... and you are in BED ASLEEP, but would
still get up and out to look at it!?!?!?!??
I know that its impossible for all of us to send or receive such a
text/sms alert, and if 1 person sees such a display, its only a few
numbers in their phone that they could text the news too anyway...
but is there such a service that can be found whereby e.g. a site one
logs onto, and can send a text to 10, 15, 25 numbers simultaneously?
If any of us are needing our beauty sleep to the point of obsession,
then the phones can be left off or silent during times of aurora
proximity alerts, while the rest of us are open to alerts...

nice idea...

Seanie.

Thats right Walter, by contrast, i have an e-mail address set up with
Vodafone that can recieve text alerts from Astro organisations that i have
subscribed to such as Sky&Telescope, AAVSO and so on, alerting you to
fleeting astronomical events.
The only difference this time is that YOU send an alert to all those in a group, if
it's urgent, i would'nt mind paying. This might have legs..

> With Vodafone.ie if you are with Vodafone you can use the service "all at
> once". You just enter your groups details and can send a text all at once.
>
> The only problem is the cost as you pay for each one of the texts sent at
> the usual rate.

My old college society has a free sms system set up for its members.

I doubt they are paying for it (unless student attitudes have really changed in the last couple of years!). This could be used at present to send alerts. Though I'll get in contact with them to see how its operated. (Though I have a feeling I may not want to know...)

If I had a Cent for every aroura I have missed due to being in the land of nodd I'd be signifficantly better off financially that's for sure!

I think it is an excellent idea.

If TCD netsoc fall through I know the Maynooth Netsoc are also working on something similar and since I'm their chief techie I should be able to get us a piece of the action!
