A free software plug-in has been released that makes a treasure trove of archival astronomical images and spectra accessible to home astronomy enthusiasts. Now anyone with a desktop computer running Adobe Photoshop can try their hand at crafting astronomical images.

perhaps I'm missong the point, but doesnt this just let you manipulate FITS images in photoshop (and the expensive full version at that)?

gimp (www.gimp.org/) lets you view and manipulate fits images for free.

Pity it only works with Photoshop 7 and CS and not Photoshop 6 which I have. I did try but the plug-in application file does not detect Photoshop on my computer, so is obviously incompatible with older versions.
