Hi all, i can see a big star/planet (not sure what to call it) its position is about south east and its the brightest object by far, it flashes red, green, white from what i can tell. Iv looked at stellarium but it shows sirius, procyon, betelgeuse and regal all in the same area. Can you help me put a name to what im seeing.

Sorry this is very vague and a disaster of a description.

Thanks very much.

It sounds exactly like Sirius, Stephen. It flickers just like that due to atmospheric disturbances.
It's the brightest star in the sky, and if you draw a line along Orion's sword belt and down to the left it should roughly point to it.
Planets don't twinkle as stars do...take a look at Jupiter, the bright object in the SW after dark, and you'll see it doesn't twinkle.

Aaahhh very good, i see the diffrence in jupiter and sirius, i would not have noticed that or even thought to look it up. Thanks very much for your explanation. Because of the street lights at the front of my house i couldnt make out orion, just alnilam, alnitak and mintaka (got all those from stellarium hahah) so i wasnt fully sure i was looking at orion.

Much appreciated EPK
