Street lighting - My options? was created by johnob
I have seen a number of cases where councils across Ireland have erected a metal plate to block out light from street lights, where a resident has cited light pollution as a problem.

I contacted my local council on this matter, who forwarded my request onto the relevant engineers who manage the street lights (Airtricity). The engineer stated that the bulbs in question were different, and that the ones in my estate do not cause light pollution. Now obviously, that is entirely subjective - but in my case - I see the lights as producing light pollution.

Where do I stand to have the light deflected from my home, or what other options are available to me?

Interesting that they are so responsive. Fingers crossed that you will get a positive outcome. What reason did you give for wanting to reduce the light pollution?

I was just honest and said that I had upgraded my astronomy setup, and that the light pollution made it almost impossible to use it. I initially contacted the council, who forwarded onto my request to an Airtricity engineer. I explained my situation, and then he gave me a call. Very nice chap and very understanding. He said that I will need to discuss it with my neighbours as we share the light, and beyond that - he said it would take about 10 days to resolve.

Said a sheet of metal could be attached at night to ensure the light is blocked sufficiently.

I think that if people have problems with street lights, they should not be passive about it - but be courteous to the council and try come to an arrangement.

I hope I can get it sorted, as it will drastically improve my seeing conditions.

Astronomy 1 light pollution 0 :)
Well the score is highly debatable but it's nice to hear that at least something is done!
