Thanks Michael,

Finally got myself registered on here. Just thinking as well would any of the astronomy shops/websites be interested in posting this up? Anything that generates interest in astronomy would benefit them.

Just goes to show Dave
that an event like that in this
Country is long over due..
When you see articles like that
from the UK kinda makes me a bit
envious.

Cheers
Roy

If this goes ahead who would
be interested in setting up something
like that Astrophotocamp website??
I would give it a go but i know that their
are a lot more people out there with
far more experience than me in web design.

Yeah, but have a look at the detail, how he is doing this.

Booked a village hall and a field beside it to hold the event.
He is actively looking for speakers.

Dave I'm just waiting on Julie to
get back to me with more information
on the lay out of the land and so far
it looks like somewhere in ballinskellig
is our best option, they have a fine hostel
there that if we spoke with them I'm sure
they would give us a bit of a deal.
As for speakers!! I don't believe speakers are
necessary as it is an observing weekend not
a weekend of lectures.. After all we have that at the
likes of Cosmos and the Galway Astronomy Festival.

Maybe a few words could be spoken at the observing
site by a few of the organizers on the night sky and
what is most prominent in the night sky for the nights
we will be observing.

Cheers Roy

to a hault.. But I'm just throwing it out there
that I will be doing something myself in Sept or Oct

I would be up for this and I would bet there would be a few others from the Dublin stargazers meetup who would also. I think my plan will be to book one of the "book now, pay later, free cancelation" deals on booking.com for both September and October and head down if the weather looks promising. Only question would be where the best observing site would be.

Its a shame Roy, are you getting no response from Kerry Dark Skies?

Has this been taken on by IFAS. Has any of the council spoken to you.

At the last MAC meeting i asked Seanie to look into this, maybe drop him an email.
he may be able to help.

No contact yet Dave..

I'm just going to enjoy my Birthday today
and recover from it tomorrow...
I might try breathing some life back into this
event on Monday or Tuesday cause you're right
I believe it would be a shame if an event like this
slips through our fingers as there was a lot of interest.

I know something like this is a lot of work to organize
especially in Ireland where the weather doesn't always
play ball.. I also know the other 2 Gold Tier Dark sky sites(in the world) are
in countries where they have a few more clear nights than we
do, but I still think it a shame that we have 1 on our little island
and to not make use of it would be a sin(In my opinion).

Cheers Roy

Hi Roy,

The Burren Star Party is on on the 19th/20th September.
The following week would still be good as new Moon is on the 24th.
I'd be on for it.

Michael.

The weekend after Burren would suit me, although I would still prefer August.

There are 3 or 4 of us up here definitely interested.

Quick hands up...
Who thinks we should get this
project back on track?

As I said to Dave Connolly, it would be a shame
if we let a place like that lie idle.

Cheers Roy

IMHO, select a date and stick to it.

With the Burren Star Party taking place in September, it might be better to select August, there is a greater chance of more people attending, two weekends after the other might be a bit much for attendees.

In this month's Astronomy Now there is a fantastic article on Sagittarius, and the wonderful sights found within its borders, for me, that would be another reason to go for August.

Just my tuppence worth - the weekend 23rd-24th August is a New Moon, the Monday is a Bank Holiday in the North which may make it easier for some of us to travel up and down - not me, I work crazy hours anyway. The IAA is involved in an event the following weekend - that's a 5 day old Moon which has never bothered me much but then I live in a relatively light polluted place. The end of September runs into the Burren party and other events for the IAA, and I'm going on my holidays :)

Hi guys..

I sent out a couple of feelers to a few
places in the South Kerry region
and I got this reply back from Skelligs Lodge.

Dear Roy

Thank you for your inquiry. I will be happy to host your group. Could you give me how many members will attend ( not exact number) and I will be able to give you a quote. What kind of rooms are you looking for

All the best

Hi Paul..

I'm swayed toward August as-well
as the weather is normally fair around that
time of year...

I'll leave it out there and we can take a vote
with those that wish to attend..
The B.S.P is on in Sept 19th-20th so that weekend
is certainly out.. Next new Moon is late Oct, and late Oct
on the South West Coast is not a nice place to be with the
wind howling in off the Atlantic.

So hands up who's good for August 22nd-24th..

Cheers Roy
