IFAS Calendar 2017 was created by michael_murphy

Hi All.

We are looking at printing a calendar for 2017 and are interested in Gauging demand for one.

Pricing at the moment will be €6 per calendar, €8 posted to Ireland (North and South) and €10 worldwide.

We need 25 calendars to be ordered to be viable.

Any feedback welcome,

Regards.

Michael.

John Flannery did Trojan work last year on preparing the 'foundation' info for a calendar....what a pity it never got printed. (Apologies to any others not mentioned that may also have put any effort in......but I believe it was all John's work).
So hoping that a similar format is on the cards for 2017.....a definite +1...count me in.

(I also found it "nice" to have the electronic copy up on my web site - see bottom of page www.kinchastro.com/information--links.html ). I would have no hesitation in making a separate donation for a similar PDF format (without images) for 2017, if that was also available for the website.

Bought 4 in 2014 as Christmas presents , best Astronomy calendar out there by far. Our Cork club put orders in for several in 2015 for Christmas raffle so would be hoping we will do again this year provided they are printed well before end November as Christmas party probably 1st week December. I myself will take a few as presents regardless.

Good advertisement I believe is the key because you have an outstanding product here and once people realise that game on!
Well done to John Flannery.

Hi all,

Many thanks for the kind words about the calendar. I've been working away on the 2017 edition and now have it well on the way towards completion. A draft version can be downloaded from the link below.

www.dropbox.com/s/6lqu6rznbj1fskj/IFAS2017.pdf?dl=1

Still have to finish the following:
  • monthly notes (February's is complete as an example of how they will look
  • celestial highlights to be summarised on page 2
  • tabular data to be added on page 3
  • images (and their captions just underneath each on the same page) to be added for the printed version
  • update event dates and mission launches over the next couple of months as the details get more refined

Feel free to post up any suggestions, questions, or comments,

John

P.S., the cover photo is one I took at the annular solar eclipse of May 31st, 2003 which we saw from Durness in northern Scotland. I used a 200mm lens and 100 ASA slide film on a Zenith camera. Paul Tipper is who is in the foreground and is observing the event with his 80-mm Short-tube refractor equipped with a glass solar filter.

It depends on the calendar. I will take one at least. Is there going to be the opportunity for people to enter photos?

Hi Kevin,

We are planning to use the photos submitted for the 2016 calendar for the 2017 calendar.

I am thinking of re-starting the photo competition for the 2018 calendar i.e. that month's winder is the calendar photo.
If there is not enough interest in a printed calendar we could produce a PDF.

Would people be interested in running the competition this way?

Michael.

Hi Michael,

I think that there will be plenty of interest in a printed calendar - most especially because of all the information that is available on it. It needs more of a push outside of this site, but I guess that will happen via the clubs anyway.

Getting a photo competition monthly winner onto the calendar is a great prize that I am sure many of us would appreciate.

What is needed in tandem with this though is the leg up that many need to put their 1st photo into the public domain. There have been very few that show their efforts on this site - the prime site in Ireland for making that 1st step.
Why so few? I think initially there needs to be some sort of push to get people out with their cameras. Everybody is not going to do Planetary, Deep Sky, Solar images or whatever.....but people need the encouragement to do whatever IS possible with THEIR equipment in THEIR location.

IFAS will want a calendar that stands out with beautiful photos - the best that the country can muster. But IFAS here has an opportunity to promote the best beginner photograph(s) also. It is not going to be easy to work out - and for sure not all will be happy but I really wish we could see new beginnings sprouting in the astrophotography section.

I am unsure what is happening at club level - but hope that the Images of Starlight exhibitions will mean that a few more images start appearing on this site in the Autumn.
Bottom line for me - yes have the monthly competition again - but somehow bring in a possibility for a complete beginner - or most improved beginner - to also get a photo into the calendar. Those starting out need the encouragement so that we are not looking at multiple entries on the calendar from just a handful of people.

Just my thoughts at 0130hrs in the morning

Hello All,

I received the final PDF from John Flannery over the weekend.
Many thanks to John for the work he has put into this.

The calendar will be printed on 100gsm paper with a 200gsm cover.
There will be 28 pages printed on A3 saddle stitched to A4.
This is similar to the last calendar.

The prices (in Euro) are as follows:
NumberCollectedDelivered to IrelandDelivered World-Wide
16.508.5010.50
215.0017.00
323.0025.00
429.0032.00

If you have an order for more than 4, email me on the address below and we can make an arrangement.

I will be at 'Comets, Stars and Mince Pies' in Dunsink on the 2nd December if you wish to collect calendars.
I live in Dundrum in South Dublin and can arrange to meet up to deliver calendars as well.

As I said earlier, we need a minimum of 25 calendars to make this viable so I have set up a gmail account
'This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.' to handle orders.

If you are interested in a calendar can you send an email with the number required and delivery address. I will wait until Monday 28th November and if there are enough orders I will send the PayPal address (it will not be the current IFAS one so please don't use that) and put in the order with the printers.

If you've any questions, please mail me or post the question here.

Thanks,

Michael.

I've just spent the last hour writing out envelopes (note to self - learn to print labels).

All Calendars are in the post and I will bring the rest to Dunsink.

We printed 100 in the end.

Thanks for all the support.

Michael.
