Tuesday, September 10th - Public lecture by Nancy Atkinson, space science writer and author

Hi all,

The Irish Astronomical Society and the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, along with Belvedere College, SJ, are delighted to present a FREE lecture on Tuesday, September 10th in Belvedere College, Dublin by renowned US-based space science writer Nancy Atkinson. The talk will be in the Lecture Theatre in the College at 7pm.

The talk can be booked via www.eventbrite.ie/e/eight-years-to-the-moon-tickets-70368119941 and the short link for sharing details of the talk on social media is bit.ly/2ZopTwb

Nancy Atkinson has been an editor for the Universe Today web site and contributed to many space and astronomy websites and magazines over the years. In 2016, her first book, Incredible Stories From Space: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Missions Changing Our View of the Cosmos shared stories from 35 NASA scientists and engineers who send robotic spacecraft to explore the Solar System.

Nancy’s talk on September 10th will feature stories from her new book Eight Years to the Moon: The History of the Apollo Missions. It tells the behind-the-scenes stories of over 60 Apollo engineers and scientists, many who have never had the chance to tell their version of those remarkable, unparalleled days of the 1960’s, an incredible period of science, engineering and cultural history. The stories in the book show the dedication and perseverance it took to overcome the challenges, hurdles and conflicts of doing things that had never been done before, and provide a glimpse into the lives of some of the hundreds of thousands of people who made it possible to land humans on the Moon. The book also includes over 150 images, including many that have never been published before.

Science, the magazine of The American Association for the Advancement of Science, called Eight Years to the Moon "one of the best books published on Apollo" and the St. Paul Pioneer Press, said "If you only read one book on the subject, it should be Eight Years to the Moon."
