Hi all

Possibility of some clear skies, if anyone wants to journey out.  Say, 8.00?

Hi Paul,

I'd be up for it alright.

I thought tonight was looking good. I had my scope (an f/5 250mm Newtonian Reflector on a Dobsonian base) set up from 7pm, The sky was nice at that point, but by 7:30pm it was clouded over. In saying that, I did manage a 30min session.

Jupiter and Saturn looked very nice at 139X. Both Equatorial Belts were observed, as were four of Jupiter's Moons. Ganymede, Io, and Europa were on Jupiter's Eastern side, while Callisto was quite a distance out to the West. I then managed a quick look at Saturn. Titan was observed, and I noticed how the rings were casting a shadow on the Planet. It was very nice indeed. I had planned to try and sketch NGC129 - thanks for the suggestion Aubrey - but I can give that a go on Friday night, hopefully.

Clear skies,

Darren.

Hi Stephen,

Click on the 'Observing Sites' link on the left hand side of the screen.
Type Glencullen in the search box and the location will appear on the map.

If you are driving from Kilternan, take the right turn just after St Patrick's church.
The entrance is marked church car park. If you have a look at Google street view, there is a Polling Station sign on the entrance.

The weather is not looking promising,  could be 70% cloud cover by 9.00.  I am going to back out for tonight.  Hopefully some clear weather will be here soon.

We would be better taking up  Radio Astronomy In Ireland with the Weather, or use Binoculars as ive started doing when you get a short break in the  Clouds

Hi all,

Based on the weather reports I'll give observing a miss for tonight, but happy to shoot the breeze for a bit instead.

Cheers,

Ok, I'll be up for a bit around 8.20. Im going to bring my son up if that's ok with everyone? We'll be keeping our social distance. I cant remember when he's ever seen the night sky outside of Dublins glare.

It was great meeting up with the rest of you, Darren, Michael and Sean on Friday night even if was only for an hour long with a nice chat.
I'm sorry Paul wasn't with us.
He is always welcome to join us because of his many pearls of wisdom.
Sean was very welcome along with his extremely well behaved son Luke.

By the way, I reckon the reason we are having so many cloudy nights right now is because last Monday I purchased a very small but necessary part for the controlling arm on my William Optics refractor. I bought 4 push-in fasteners from J G Engineering who are in Inchicore.

So sorry about that, folks. Even if we buy something infinitely small as a push-in fastener, we are guaranteed a load of overcast skies one after another. Lol!!

Best regards from Aubrey.

Our weekly non-observing sessions are beginning to turn into weekly TV and film reviews. Last week, it was the turn of Plan 9 from Outer Space, and this week was the turn of Millennium! I've never spent as much time chatting about and watching sci-fi!

I wonder what show will be the topic of conversation next Friday, because by the sounds of it we will have another few weeks of cloudy skies - thanks Aubrey :)

But seriously, it is good to meet-up even if the scopes stay in the car, and it was great to see Sean again, and meet his nice son Luke.

Until next Friday, clear skies to all..even you Finbarr ;)

Maybe we could talk about more astronomical issues next Friday - although we did deal with some issues last Friday.

Michael chatted about his spectacular Tulip Nebula image. Every time I hear about his image I think about the 5 points of Calvinism. You can ask me about them some time (if you dare!) - even though they have nothing to do with the nebula in Cygnus. Michael's shot will be in the next issue of Orbit for sure.

We do keep bringing up the upcoming planetary conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. It's great that Michael has full confidence we will be able to observe the event in December from our new observing site in Glencullen.

By the way, there is the possibility we might have clear skies on Wednesday night coming!!

And on that note, I wish you clear skies,

Aubrey.
