Kilmichael Point was created by lunartic_old

Hi all

I have been considering observing locations and one place that was mentioned is Kilmichael Point on the Wicklow/Wexford border.  I took a trip down there this morning to check it out.
It took no more that 45 minutes from my house to get there, take the exit for Arklow South and it is 11 kms further east along some narrow country roads.  There is a wide patch of ground, about the same consistency as the Sugarloaf that will accommodate half a dozen cars.
File Attachment:

Further down the road, about 20 metres, there is another place to set up, perhaps two cars.
File Attachment:

There are a small collection of old coastguard cottages on the opposite side of the road.  From the first location, you will be observing to the right of these cottages towards the south.
File Attachment:

At the second site you will be observing to the left of these cottages.
File Attachment:

I was talking to a local who told me they are occupied, by a surgeon and a golf pro, to me they did not appear to be permanently occupied, perhaps being weekend or summer occupations.  There were no security lights on the cottages that were visible.
There are great views to the south and walking along the coast there are only isolated houses.

To the east there is the sea.

Arklow is about 15 kms to the north-west, directly north there is nothing.

There is plenty of space for cars and scopes, it is not too far a journey, it will be a really dark site, if it is windy because we will be directly on the coast, it might not be viable.  I believe that it is worth going down one night and checking it out.

Paul

Hi Paul,

Very many thanks for checking out and taking these useful photos. It looks like a great spot.

And I'd happily head down on the 9th Michael. So, count me in.

All the best,
Darren.

Weather update,

The weather for the 9th looks awful but 10th is promising.

I'll check again on Thursday.

Michael.

Weather for Friday is still awful but Saturday is better, it's not 100% clear but should be clear enough to assess the site.

I propose to meet at Kilmichael Point at 9.30 on Saturday evening.

I'll review the weather at lunchtime on Saturday.

The site is here and is about an hour from Dundrum.

Sounds good, Michael.  If anyone is unsure of the exact location, we can meet up nearby and go on together.

Hi Paul,

That's a good idea about meeting up nearby and following you to the spot.

Where do you propose we meet?

Clear skies,

Darren.

The services after Arklow might be a good spot. It's the junction after the turnoff for Kilmichael.

Yes.

I'm up for the trip, we may get some breaks and give us an idea of the seeing, also what effect the nearby houses have with regards to lights, etc.

Was thinking about what we were talking about a plot of land, I was browsing daft.ie and there are plenty of plots going quite cheap.  Unfortunately, most are in the west, Kerry or Donegal.
There are some in Roscommon, about 2 hours drive away, like this one:

Anybody got 15 grand burning a hole in their pocket?

Hello everyone.

What did you all observe on Saturday night or Sunday morning?

Just wondering,
