Solarfest 2014 Saturday June 21st at Dunsink was created by michaeloconnell
Following on from the success over the last number of years, IFAS in conjunction with Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies Astronomy & Astrophysics Group www.dias.ie and Trinity College Astrophysics Research Group http://physics.tcd.ie/Astrophysics/ are co-hosting a one-day event in Dublin to celebrate solar astronomy. Solarfest 2014 will take place on Saturday 21st June 2014 at Dunsink Observatory, Dublin.

Further details on speakers and how to reserve a seat will be posted in due course.

Worth looking at Peter Gallagher's Twitter page:

You can classify sunspots:

We hope to discuss this at Solarfest.

"What does a (space) weather man do?" - Dr. D. Shaun Bloomfield

Our Sun is not the quiet star that it was historically thought to be. The
magnetic field that varies through the solar cycle causes the Sun to send
out eruptions in the form of solar flares and coronal mass ejections, both
of which can impact the technologies we use in day-to-day life. This talk
will outline how space weather affects humanity and how we predict its
occurrence in order to live (essentially) undisturbed inside the Sun's
range of influence.

Dr. Bloomfield is a Senior Research Fellow in solar physics and space
weather at Trinity College Dublin. He has worked on several European Space
Agency (ESA) satellites, such as the ongoing Proba2 space-weather
monitoring mission and the Solar Orbiter mission due for launch in 2017.
His research focuses on predicting the occurrence of solar flares and he
is Deputy-Chair of an ESA Topical Working Group on 'Space Weather
Forecasting'.

"Structures on the surface of the Sun" - Dr. Eamon Scullion

Four centuries ago, Galileo Galilee turned his telescope towards the Sun
and announced to the world that the Sun god also has pimples on his face
(i.e., sunspots). Our ability to observe the Sun and the magnetic field
that causes sunspots to form has increased significantly over the past
century. In this talk I will show the fine detail of structures on the Sun
and their evolution, using real images and movies from ground- and space-
based observatories.

"Simple Solar Spectroscopy" - Dave Grennan , Raheny Observatory

Spectroscopy is the study of light. By breaking light up into it's component colours we can determine lots of useful information about the source. Our Sun is a complex beast seething with chemistry which becomes readily apparent when studied with a spectrograph. In this presentation Dave will outline various methods of spectroscopically analysing Sun light and show how with even with a very simple home-made spectroscope, you too can study the Sun in finer detail than you ever thought possible. This presentation will conclude with a practical demonstration if possible.

Dave Grennan is an amateur astronomer from Raheny in North Dublin. Dave carries out research astronomy with his 14" astrograph at his observatory in Raheny focusing on the areas of supernovae and near earth asteroids. Dave has had some notable successes including the discovery of three new supernovae and two main belt asteroids.

Hi Michael. Can you just check if you have received our booking? I have booked for Valerie and myself.

The reason I am asking is the link your have given is not accepting my password at present. Thanks.
