Right! So you’re all out enjoying you romantic meals and so, her indoors is watching "The Sixth Sense", a good film but seen it before. Both kids are sick but mercifully asleep so just the night to be thinking of things cosmological.

I'm reading The Universe by Hawkins and have got to the part of fraunhofer lines. I am wondering can spectrums of stars be analysed by amateurs (in particular me and my celestar)? If so, is the equipment expensive and where can you get it?

Most importantally how do you do it. :?:

It is theoretically possible to shove a spectrometer up the back of your telescope and get a spectrum of a star or what ever but the equipment is not cheap.

I know here in the college they have a digital spectrometer with a fiber optic head on it and you just point it at what ever you want and it displays a graph of the spectrum on a computer screen in real time but I know that was a very expensive piece of kit!

You cantake a very crude spectrum by taking many differnt images with different filters but it will be VERY crude and probably wonlt show you anything interesting.

Unfortunately I think the answer to this one is no but I really hope I'm wrong!

I have trouble taking images of the spectra of streetlights so I'll pass on stars.

There is a book, which I havent read by the way, called Practical Amateur Spectroscopy (ISBN 1852334894), so apparently it is possible.

Hi,
In the ads in the back of sky and telescope , there is an add for a spectoscope that fits onto the back of a scope.
The company is called "Rainbow Optics" and they quote a price of $179 for a visual device and $229 for a visual/ccd.imaging device.

Thats not bad considering what a high end eyepiece can cost.
