Ever Ready Headlight LED

Ever Ready Headlight LED was created by Paul FitzGerald

I saw and bought this item just last weekend, and managed to get out on Sat. night (1st night in ages  ) and try it out.

It has two settings by means of a sliding switch:
1. A twin diode white LED with magnified lens, and
2. A single red LED.

I was very impressed with the white leds, as they lit up the area 4m in front very well.

The red led is of course weaker (1 diode, different wavelength), but it was great for observing, as it gave just the right amount of light for (viewing black) maps. And as it's on your head, the light sourse is up close to eg eyepieces as you work on them.

It was v. comfortable to wear, and I'm no fan of having to wear headgear.
I think the switch may be difficult to work with gloves though.

It retails for ~€15.00.

Ganley's Hardware of Athlone.

I'm sure it's available to but or order at other shops that stock Ever Ready.

Leo,
Not at all.
It was timely that I saw them, as they are referred to in this month's Sky @ Night mag. as a v. helpful accessory.

BTW If any one in the Dublin area, or along the N4/6 between Athlone and Dublin, would like one, I could pick up a couple over the next few weeks.

We could do the Buy & Sell thing an' meet up to exchange etc.
Item costs €14.95; I'll charge a total of €15.00 for also doing the pick up!!! What a deal!

PM me if so.

Paul,
Better charge a little more, they're actually costing €15.95 each! If you don't, you may find you're business venture going bankrupt very quickly! :D

Seanie,
Picked you up one this evening. I'll give it to you next time I see you. Going to give them a little test this evening after it gets dark.

I picked up an Energizer LED headlight today in Woodies DIY. It has 4 white LED and 2 red ones. Works well.

2 red ones? might that be a little like overkill? I mean, you'd be getting red spots afterwards!

Not really. There is a faint red glow infront of your eyes for a few seconds after you turn them off.

Most of these lights seems to have been replaced with a light with a rubber sequential switch which turns on the white LEDS before finally getting to the all important red one. The older light with the sliding switch is better as you don't have to ruin your night vision to turn on the single red LED. I bought two of them originally in case they went out of production.
However, they are still available, I saw them in B&Q today. (This is the Energiser light)

I have to go throught 4 white LED sequences before i get to the red one. I just cup the light in my hand so as not to ruin my dark adapted eyes.

Kind of defeats the purpose of the head mount light if you've got to take it off to do this.
I've one of the older models with the selctable switch and I hope it keeps going for years to come.

Mine from'05 has the slider switch & it's still going fine.

I see it's down from €15 to ~€12 in B&Q now.
But for ~€15 there's a bigger version with 3 white & 2 (yes 2  ) red leds.
Still with the slider switch too, I think.

Sorry i should have said i cup it in one hand while wearing it and go through the cycles with the other hand.

I saw them in Dunnes today.......(different model)...............it had one big white LED and one small red. I was thinking of buying one but thats just a waste of money really.
