School of Nautical Studies, CIT, Bishopstown, Cork. Mainly cloudy and overcast. Managed to observe Venus transit at 0851UT for about 45 seconds and later at various times as cloud breaks appeared.

Excellent view using a marine sextant, with suitable shades (filters) and an 8 x 30 telescope.

It got a lot clearer for me from 11:15 onwards, still patchy mind but I'm quite happy now. :D

What a great sight. Gorgeous clear skies from Sandymount for third and fourth contacts. Even had a primary school queue up to look at Venus. Don't forget thost Transit of Venus Survey sheets please while it's still fresh in your minds.

Well, there was plenty of cloud down here in Urlingford.
So, after several calls to Dave Lillis (Thanks Dave!) and a check on the satellite imagery, I drove the 50 miles to Boher, Limerick to the SAC observing site. Got there about 11:30am.
Weather was much better with great views for most of the remainder of the transit.
Below are a few images:

Dave,

Your Venus transit images are on line on the Geocities mirror of our site . I could not connect to Eircom to update our main site yet.

It's at times like this that having a mirror site is useful 8) !

Madrid, Spain:- rang Paul Tipper (South Dublin A.S.) there and he has had lovely views at the observatory of a work colleague to the north of the city. Some thunderclouds building up so they might miss third contact. Black Drop lasted about three minutes . . . lots of digital images taken which he will have on his return to Ireland.

Some pics and a brief report of our observations from La Canãda are available at astrosurf.com/juan_lacruz/VenusTransit.htm

Amazing picture today on NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day site. It shows a closeup of Venus on the edge of the Sun with sunlight refracted through the Venusian atmosphere.

Wow, that is an incredible pic John

Just a question I'd like to throw out to all who say the 3rd contact.
Did anyone see the black drop effect as expected, i.e. see venus merging via a dark "bridge" for a minute or so before it was "at" the Suns limb.
What I saw was Venus getting closer and closer to the edge until it finally touched the limb as in the photo below.

www.geocities.com/shannonsideac/graphics/inner/vt1203dl.jpg
The pic above is just as Venus and the Suns limb "joined", before this they were seperate, from my point of view.
I noticed that Conor mentioned earlier that he didnt see what he expected either ??

BTW, other Venus transit pics taken at the SAC site near Limerick can be seen at,

Dave, those pics didn't show up - I don't think you can link directly to a picture off a geocities site, you have to go through the main page their ads show up.

Anyhow, I had a look at your pics, great given the weather conditions. I would like to think I saw the black drop effect but I wouldn't swear by it. Even in your shot it kinda looks like the edge of the Sun is being sucked in very slightly.

Hi John/Conor,
I see what your saying, I just thought that it'd be much more prominent then whats in the picture..

BTW, the picture link worked for me, but I did put the address in underneath it just in case, good thing I did.
Here it is from the eircom site, which I'll use from now on.

Replied by dave_lillis on topic black drop effect ???

Heres an interesting piece in sky and telescope on the black drop effect.
skyandtelescope.com/news/article_1277_1.asp

So maybe this black drop effect is only visible IF the gap between the Suns limb and Venus is less then then the resolution of the scope+eyepiece/webcam, under the given seeing, would not the 2 objects merge ??
Here is a link to the Trace images,
vestige.lmsal.com/TRACE/transits/venus_2004/

Given that scopes in the 19th and 18th century were of relitively small aperture and in some cases less then perfect quality, that this might be the case ,, any thoughts??

Hi,

In case this isn't posted somewhere else here, a 30 minute show on RTE last Tuesdays Future Tense program is at www.rte.ie/radio1/evening/futuretense/

The first half of the program was recorded at Sandymount tower. And it's good to hear that there was such a good turnout, from amateurs, the public, and the professionals like Dr. Tom Ray.

Second half from the Phoenix Park...

Sicily, Italy:- spoke with Al White and he said it was cloudy yesterday but lovely clear spells for the transit -- halo seen around Venus (sunlight filtering through its atmosphere).

Its good to see the images posted online now confirming the `halo`. Although I could see it clearly I wasnt sure if my eye was being tricked by an optical illusion or not! It was clearer after 3rd contact.

Hi,

Some other amateur images and news from around Europe:

Italy: Unione Astrofili Italiani organised a live broadcast of the event in conjunction with a major Italian paper www.corriere.it/Rubriche/Astronomia/venere/index.shtml

Finland: Taurus Hill Observatory, almost 12,000 images, or 12 CD's full! They were lucky to have clear skies for the transit despite very bad forecast weather. www.ursa.fi/yhd/kassiopeia/galleria/vt20...=2&offset=0&limit=12

Czech Republic: Hradec Kralove public observatory and planetarium. Images on their website www.astrohk.cz/live/ and also on a major Czech newspaper site imgs.idnes.cz/oprilohy/infografika/vesmir/prechod/venuse.htm

Poland: www.astro.uni.wroc.pl/vt-2004/obrazy_tra...row/aleksandrow.html

Norway: It was cloudy in Oslo, but Carsten Arnholm, a name that may be familiar to some of you from webcam forums, captured this video with a 400mm refractor and a TouCam webcam arnholm.org/astro/venus/transit_divx_352x288.avi ( 1.8MB, DivX codec www.divx.com/divx/ )
