Well I'm not a "whizzkid" like Nico but if the asteroid only comes within 32,500 kilometres of Earth, aren't there only about 500 satellites in HEO's and probably only a few dozen at 32,500 or higher, not 40,000!

I don't know how the calculation was performed Gordon - statistics, probabilities and numbers of satellites in orbit was never my strongpoint  Perhaps account has been taken of satellites that *will* be in HEO by 2029...

What caught my eye was that NASA has told ESA that the 13-year old's findings are correct.

So, the probability of a direct encounter with earth in 2036 has increased from 1:45000 to 1:450, apparently.

I'm off to Tesco to stock up on baked beans.

*incorporates bomb shelter into ongoing house plans*

So the whole world coming together to save itself scenario could actually come into effect after all in the coming decade? Intriguing stuff about that teenager making the probability even greater, and seemingly correct too.

Do we start to loose sleep over it again?

Have I time to go to the bar to get the last round in?

Anyway Dave....don't buy baked beans, we are in enough trouble already without increasing the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere...
