Dear Colleagues,

The Ninth European Symposium for the Protection of the Night Sky will
be launched at the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, on 16th September 2009
and will then take place from the 17th to the 19th September 2009 in
the Market Place, Armagh, Northern Ireland.

On behalf of the organising committee I would like to invite you to
submit proposals for consideration in the programme. This
international symposium, held annually, provides a platform for
sharing information on light pollution and its effects on the
environment, astronomy and human health and also on solutions to the
issue through advanced lighting technology, public and amenity
lighting, and policy.

The symposium will primarily focus on the following areas:

* Astronomy
* Wildlife, Energy and Environment
* Education
* Health
* Luminaire technologies and design
* Policy and Public lighting

There are a limited number of presentation slots available lasting
from 10-30 minutes. Papers which are not selected for presentation may
be offered a place in our poster area. All selected papers will have
their abstracts featured on our website and in the conference
proceedings.
Full papers and presentations may be made available on the website and
potentially other media.

Please submit abstracts, up to 200 words, via email to
submissions@lightpollution2009.eu no later than May 30th 2009.

Further Symposium details and pre-registration is available on the
website - www.lightpollution2009.eu

Core sponsors of the Symposium are Discover Science and Engineering,
Ireland; the Royal Irish Academy; and the Armagh Observatory through
funding from the Northern Ireland Department of Culture, Arts and
Leisure. Dark Skies Awareness -- seeing in the dark -- is a
cornerstone project of the United Nations International Year of
Astronomy 2009.

We look forward to seeing you in Armagh!

Best Wishes,
Albert White, on behalf of the Ninth European Symposium for the
Protection of the Night Sky Organising Committee
