Good day to you all.

www.met.ie are suggesting that Friday night 19th June might be clear for a while.

Such clear nights are quite rare at the moment.
So some of us might give it a bash!

In the meantime we can let it lash rain.
After all we have a water drought.

I wonder when Phase 3 of the corona virus is due. (?)

Clear skies from Aubrey.

A clear Friday morning would be helpful too Aubrey... for a daylight occultation of Venus. This BAA article has the details -

Thank you for that notification, Finbarr.
I know about that occultation.
But it seems rather dangerous to me.
I did see a most spectacular lunar occultation of Venus in the Monday evening 1st December 2008.
5 of us met up in Greystones Co. Wicklow.
We saw Venus go behind the Moon and then reappear out the other side.
Amazing!

Clear skies to you, Finbarr.

Sounds amazing Aubrey. And Jupiter was just 2 degrees away! It does seem like a difficult observation on Friday but should still be a beautiful sight as they rise together before dawn.

Here is the thread from all those years ago, with some of the photos still accessible. Should bring back some nice memories for you.

Thank you very much for all this reminiscing, Finbarr.
After the Total Solar Eclipse on 1st August 2008 in Siberia, the occultation of Venus by the Moon was my 2nd favourite observing event of that year.

By the way, next Sunday 21st June 2001 is the 19th year since the Total Solar Eclipse I observed in Zambia. It was my 2nd TSE and I'm still in touch with my friend from Lusaka to this very day!
I find it very hard to believe how the years have gone by!

Best regards from Aubrey.

Nice thread gents!

Those photos are excellent too. Hopefully the sky clears. June has not got off to a good start.

All the best,

Darren.

Good to hear from you, Darren.
I am now of the persuasion that IY Comae is not a carbon star.
Simbad is wrong!
I will give more details tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone who has checked this star.
It turns out IY Com is an M class star.

Best regards from Aubrey.

I am also sorry to say it looks as though the weather people are now saying that Friday night is not going to be clear in any way until after midnight.

Best regards,

Aubrey.

Well be the hokey pokey! IY Comae is certainly putting us in a spin. I'm looking forward to reading more about it.

When will the clear skies return?

Darren.
