REINER SKETCH 16 NOV 2021 was created by Until_then-Goodnight!
Hello everyone,

With the bit of a clear spell last night I set up my f/5 250mm Newtonian Reflector on a Dobsonian base in my backgarden just after 9pm. The Moon was high in South, so I decided to sketch a crater. I went with 'Reiner' as it stood out against Oceanus Procellarum. With the vast majority of the crater floor cast in shadow, I could not see its central peak.

However, I did notice a hummocky rampart running from the carter's southern limb. I also observed Reiner Gamma. Considered by some as the most famous lunar swirl, this 70km feature is listed as 'L57' on the Lunar 100. Prior to reading up on Gamma Reiner today, I was unaware of such a list. The Lunar 100 is a list of lunar objects that provides Moon lovers with something akin to what deep-sky observers enjoy with the Messier catalogue. Considering, I have number 57 off the list I think I'll try to bag the remaining 99 over the coming years :)

Othe details from last night's session include...

Time: 21:34 UT (finished the sketch at 22:08UT).
Eyepiece 5mm Orion Edge on Planetary eyepiece
Seeing 5pk
Transparency 3

Materials used black and white charcoal on black sketching paper.

As always thanks for reading and taking a look. Comments feedback, and critique are always welcomed.

Clear skies all,

Darren.

Hello Darren.

I have been meaning to comment on your sketch of the 30km crater Reiner.
It is very excellent of course and I do very much admire the ray passing to its north.
Nice dark crater too.

I too was observing the 12 day old Moon on Tuesday night for a short while and I couldn't help by notice the Marius domes sitting right on the Moon's terminator - hundreds of them.

Vallis Schroteri was spectacular as ever. But further north I saw Babbage + Babbage A. These 2 delightful craters were extremely close to the terminator.

Clear skies from your astronomical friend,

Aubrey.

Hi Aubrey,

Very many thanks for your message. I noticed those Marius Domes too. It was my first time to observe them, and thought they were fascinating. I was going to sketch, but went with Reiner as I felt it would have a more doable target for me.

So, much for last night! As I went to bring to scope out, the sky was covered in cloud...what a difference 10 minutes make.

Clear skies,

Darren.
