Best Halo Complex Seen Yet! was created by martinastro

16.00 - 20.00

Today Conor and i witnessed the best halo complex we have ever seen which lasted for a minimum duration of 4 hours. On view was a..

Colourful 22* sun halo

Coloured Upper Tangent Arc with vertical white 'horns'

Multi coloured 22* east and west sundogs with Parhelic circle

Bright coloured Circumzenithal Arc

Coloured 44* Sun Halo

All of these atmospheric phenomena were visible at the one time and were truely staggering to watch. We walked out to a country location and took a wealth of images as well as camcorder footage. The western sundog was the brightest i have ever seen framed bewteen tree branches with a long white tail. This is the best display i have observed since last Aprils spectacle. Unfortunately i destroyed my images by over sharpening them but Conor has got his great shots to share. Here are a few of mine...

hi Martin/Conor,

great shots! Fantastic to capture the 18 degree halo. Well done on the rainbow shot the other week too that really shows the preferential scattering of light, resulting in the inside of the bow being brighter than the outside.

you should send that 18 degree shot to Les Cowley at www.atoptics.co.uk/

atb,

John

For the 2nd day in a row i have witnessed an impressive halo display around the sun. The sky was covered with high level cirrus type clouds and murk creating the perfect conditions for these atmospheric phenomena. The complex halo display lasted from 13.05 - 17.30 and consisted of a bright colourful 22* halo, upper tangent arc, twin 22* elongated yellow/white sundogs with bright 10* long 'tails' extending from each dog away from the sun. The parhelic circle actually extending from the sun through the halo and beyond the sundog into the sky. Note that the sundog is not located on the 22* halo but is located outside it which is more rare than the common sundog. All images ISO64/shutter priority 1000/Handheld....
