Nice solar prominences today was created by gnason

The Sun is displaying a number of nice prominences around its disk this morning. Also sunspot groups AR 0875 & 0876 coming well into view now with good detail visible in the PST including white plages. 0875 produced a few small short flares on the 24th so worth keeping an eye on.

Managed finally to capture some images of prominences with my son's Casio Exilm S600 (6ml pixels) instead of my usual fuzzy red blobs to date but won't get time to process until this evening. Not seeing any surface detail in the unprocessed images though so more experimentation needed with settings.

For some reason I haven't delved too deeply into yet, a 20mm Erfle I have is proving absolutely superb visually both in terms of sharpness overall and visibility of surface detail (contrast, colour etc), some way ahead of the views of through the supplied 12.5 Kellner or my Vixen LV 8-24 zoom, 8mm Radian, 13mm T6 Nagler or 7.5mm Vixen Plossl which I've been playing around with to date since getting the PST. With the Erfle, I need to turn the tuning ring a tad more CCW to tune in surface detail than with the other eyepieces but suddenly it's as if the PST has gone well below 1.0 angstrom. Seems like this Erfle is particularly well corrected on-axis.

I'd love to get my hands on a coronado, maybe next year.
I did have 2 on loan at one stage and you just cant beat the views.
When I had them , I never managed to catch any great big prominences, such as the ones we saw at cosmos last weekend.
Nice report Gordon.
