Wonderful Seeing Virginia Co Cavan. was created by DeirdreKelleghan
Saturday night at 1:45am LT 00:45 UT, in Virginia Co Cavan, the summer milky way was the very best I have ever seen it, so so good. I could split double stars with my eyes and Ursa Major was almost popping out of the night sky. Andromeda was awesome and pointed too nicely by M45 which had just cleared tree level. Also naked eye as was the Double Cluster in Perseus.

I sat round the front of our place up there and looked straight into M11 with my eyes, just wonderful, many of the M objects in Sagittarius were low then and screened by large trees on the top of the drumlin.

I lay on the picnic table The Milky Way arched over my head and in my 10X50's there was just too much information. It was very still, and quiet except for the munching of three horses in the field behind me and the ticking of the electric fence box in the next field.I lay there for an good while just soaking in the view which as usual included many satellites and shooting stars.

Delphinus was prominent a lovely shape above Altair in to the south, and Arcturus in Bootes and Corona Borealis in the west were so clear they almost seemed to project forward in a three D way against the black night sky.Capella in Auriga dominated the northern sky perched above the drumlins and as you can tell by now I did not bring the scope with me:-( as the forecast was for cloud, rain, thunder and lightning.

We had all of the weather forecast plus hot sun, and this amazing Saturday/Sunday morning sky so unexpected and welcome even though I only had my binoculars and my eyes.

The seeing was exceptional not sure what to class it, as I never saw it so good before, in Ireland. Seeing sky clocks available seem general and not specific for locations in this country, why is that ? Do we have so few good seeing evenings that it is not worth generating SSC's for astronomical use?

I also was observing between 12 and 4 am. The seeing was exceptional and in fact I was going through focussing routines and managed to obtain very accurate focus to get down to fainter stars. The seeing was 1.8 arc seconds, which normally would have been around 3/4 arc seconds. I have gone into this in another post.

I too was out around 12:30am. Dee and I stopped in the countryside on the way home to have a look for a few Perseids (see my post here ). I also thought that the seeing was quite exceptional for this time of year. It looked like being out in the depths of Winter!

I live only 16 miles away from Virginia, the seeing on a clear night in cavan / monaghan can be superb :P
