Hi,

I wonder has anybody any advice of where to get a telescope objective mirror re-aluminised.
I presume its not done in Ireland. I have a 15 year old 38 cm (15 inch) mirror that needs to be done.

yea, orion optics are good, see
www.orionoptics.co.uk/OPTICS/mirrorrecoating.html

There are some in the US that do it, but shipping will be more and customs might be an issue, best to keep it in the EU if you can.

Dave is right, John. Shipping will be a big factor. If it is a large mirror (like, 8" and bigger), you need to really, properly pack and protect it. You need a good, stiff outer shell maybe made up of 2 or 3 layers of cardboard, or a single crate-like layer. Inside, plenty of foam/styrofoam insulation, and the mirror wrapped in a lint-free cloth surrounded by bubblewrap. All this adds to the weight, and you will need to go by courier for tracking and signing purposes.

Hi John

A guy in our club sent his to Galvoptics in England, it took a couple of weeks and was £125 all in, his was a 10" mirror. Their website gives a price of £145 plus p&p for upto 16".

The job they did was great and the packaging was 1st class.
