Folks - just got a post from the German Astrofair where the author noted an 18" RC development scope from Celestron. Now that's interesting...

The mount it is on is a smasher too (rated at 100kg  )

"The most remarkable items on display were the new 10micro 4000 mount
(+ 100kg) with a prototype 18 inch RC from Celestron at the Baader
Planetarium booth (image 549), the new Tak TOA150 (image 551) and
the MEADE RX400 series scopes (images 554,555)."

I've no idea how long it'll be before it ends up on sale but I reckon Celestron will want to get it out sooner rather than later. And I'd expect it to be very competitively priced in relation to the largest RX400 from Meade. Happy days. Isn't competition a great thing? Next thing is we'll have a price match announcement from A&S

Dave,
it looks very impressive, i wouldn't imagine there would be a huge price war if these are supposed to be their top of the range kit. from the looks of it you'd have to have it permanently mounted otherwise you'd get a hernia assembling it everytime to observe.

I'm not sure if it's real competition or just mimicry. Meade bring out the LPI, Celestron bring out their equivalent, Meade announce an RCX, Celestron have an RC Development scope, Meade have a wireless autostar, and I have a funny feeling that a wireless nexstar is going to be just around the corner.

Meade are Guinness, Celestron are Beamish.

It kind of looks like the mount used by NUI Galway at their observatory. Anyone at Connaught Star Party last knows what I mean.

Meade are Guinness, Celestron are Beamish.

I bet you had plenty of each on Sunday night Shane!
