Thats some price compared to Telescope House www.telescopehouse.co.uk/page.aspx?theLa...69CVDRCHrrgZ68vzCTgh

I assume the're the same scope.

That's an excellent deal for the etx-70.
I'm gonna get one I think. Even if you didn't want the scope, it'd be a great mount for a camera.
It's selling at a lower price than what you'd get it for in the US!

For astrophotography, since it's an alt-az, you'd have to put it on a wedge to minimise field-rotation. So, you'd probably need some counterweight to prevent straining the motor.

Any ideas how you'd piggyback a camera on something like that?

Looks like a great deal though... Just don't tell too many people or we'll be fighting for the last boxes....

Ah now to decide which lidl store is likley to have the least astronomers and the most telescopes...

I suppose it is pointless to ring them and ask how many the expect to have in each store?

www.scopetronix.com/etx60acc.htm have a lot of accessories for the ETX, including a piggyback mount (just a ring to go around the scope and a camera mount attachment on it)

Its hard to see on the lidl site what the tripod is like and how easy it would be to make a wedge or even just tilt it to get RA-Dec motion and avoid field rotation.

But I'd use the LXD55 mount for that anyway so I'm not too bothered. I have other bright ideas for how to use a (relativly) cheap etx...

That looks like prime focus. However, I was wondering about piggybacking a 35mm SLR on the OTA somehow. But that's a nice link to have - thanks! 8)

So with the ETX-70, it has motorised tracking then? If used on its own, then the motor would be fine. Does the guidance system have the "30,000+ objects" library in it?

What use the mount on its own? you could if you can bodge something else into the fork. Its a light scope (only one lens since its a refractor and not a mak) so I doubt the drive will handle much weight, piggybacking something would be fine though.

Its only the basic autostar. which has about 1400. www.meade.com/catalog/etx/etx70.html

John pointed out the image on Weasners ETX site and that is probably the best resource for info on the scope www.weasner.com/etx/menu.html

Some people have bought them, removed the 70mm scope and put on the PST instead.
Now, I know what you're thinking, a solar scope with goto for 1,400 objects! :)
I think the idea of it is so that they have mount which tracks.

This sounds like a very good deal. Has anybody out there got one of these already? and is there a PC control hookup?

Also, if people find this in there local LIDL can they post that here. I find that not every shop carrys all the specials, they seem to spread the various specials over many stores and not carry the lot in any single store. The LIDL I go to didn't get the zoom binos al all

I'll ring lidl tomorrow and see if I can get any info on the number they expect to have in each store. If its anything like when they sell satellite gear or computers you may need to queue well before 9am to get a ticket (one per person).

Well, on last years experience with the Skylux, I went in afte lunch in the Tullamore branch, and there were about 8-10 boxes of them there. I would also think that they would have more in the store room because of the size of the boxes and space restrictions in store.

Replied by Liam on topic EXT70
The tripod in the Lidl web site shows the EXT 70 with the basic tripod which is not hight adjustable and is only reasonable strong.

I have seen an EXT105 close up recently and I think the control mechanism is the same on the 70. If so, it is well able to carry a larger scope (not an 8" mind!... are you listening Conor?) or to piggyback a camera.

The hand controller in the pic has 1400 object database. The hand controller of the EXT105 I saw had been upgraded by Meade at the factory to the next model up with loads more objects. We might be lucky..

It the tripod is angular, it is the basic model, If shiny silver, and is cyclinder shaped, it is a better model.

I suggest looking at the scopes in Lidl to see exactly what you are getting before purchase. The pic in the web sit emay not be accurate.

Either way its a super little scope for the money. A great Christmas gift for the budding young Astornomer.

Has anyone used the EXT 70 and if so what is your opinion of it?

Liam

ps If Lidl ever offer the LX90 at comparable prices .... there will be some rush!!! :D

Wow,
Im getting one, no two ways about it.
Great for bringing on holidays and piggybacking a camera.
One fo the guys in the club has an autostar etx 90, and from what I've seen of it, its perfectly fine mechanically, must give him a ring !

Building a simple wedge will make it an equatorial scope, but you might need to upgrade the controller to an autostar.
If this cope is the same as other ETXs, then there is a PC serial link on it.

Has anyone ever used one of these small controllers and an autostar, besides the database and bigger keyboard is there a differance ?

If the tripod is not adjustible, that might be a problem, with other ETXs, Ive seen, the tripod has to be level for the goto to work properly, the newest ETXs have this true leverl north gizmo, but I cant imagine this having that.

I was tinkering with the idea of dismantling it and piggyback it on the bigger scope, and use the forks as a camera platform, just ideas.
What the hell, get 2, use one as is and dismantle the other

The add mentions "planetarial fog", never seen that before, looking forward to seeing it through this scope

Dave - the planeterial fog is that which you find hovering in the skies of Ireland...

And by the way lads, since you're all off to Lidl, I've cancelled the orders for the Tak FCT 200 observatory systems. Xmas cheer to you all
