Dobsonian Mount - Teflon?? was created by michaeloconnell
Hi,
I'm in the process of making a dobsonian mount for my 4.5" scope the plans for which I've made using the San Fran Sidewalk Astronomers website as a reference. I've virtually all of the mount made from 15mm MDF but need one more thing....Teflon.
How easy/difficult is it to get pieces of teflon???

If it is difficult, is there another material I could use in it's place?

Thanks,

Michael

I would assume that any decent telecope shop would be able to get som eteflon for you. I know you can definitely get it off the AI Astronomy shop.

I saw an add somewhere that Beacon hill telescopes (UK Based) ( www.beaconhilltelescopes.mcmail.com/ ) supply telescope making equipment including teflon.

I've tried ringing Beacon Hills but only get an answering machine and the website prices are a couple of years old. Tried a few places other web in the US, the UK and also priced AI. On average, it costs about €10 incl P+P for 7 No. 1inch sq. pads. (4 for the altitude bearings and 3 for the base)
BTW, in the process of my searching on the web, I came across this handy website: website.lineone.net/~fmilsom/ATM%20page.html . This has links to websites selling products in the UK for those into telescope making. I've it added to my favorites...you just never know when you'll need it!
Thanks,
Michael

Michael,

The A & S shop sells a packet of teflon strips for 7 euro (I think) + 3 euro postage. There are enough pieces in the packet for one telescope and it includes the little securing pins as well. Remember to tap the pins in slightly below the surface of the teflon.

Regards,

Gordon
