If you're looking for a compact set of star maps to bring outside at night, you won't go too far wrong printing these on A3 paper. Might want to print on a B/W printer though. I think they're very good.

Well, it's an interesting project for an amateur astronomer to embark on but I'm not too sure about its usefulness to others. For the amateur seeking a free program from which to print maps, there is none better than Cartes du Ciel. It is totally free and has extensive databases and features comparable to commercial programs.
