Roll off roof direction was created by albertw
Hi,

My roll off observatory plans are progressing well. I've a query though that I don't see answered well anywhere else. My roof will have to roll off to the south west; there are some trees there but I don;t want the roof to obstruct the view any further.

So the normal way to roll the roof isl

But is there a good reason not to do it this way?

Cheers,
~Al

I've no experience at DIY Observatories but one thought.
If the roof were wet due to rain wouldn't the second design be prone to dripping water (and maybe increase risk of tree fall debris that may settle on roof) into equipment area?

I'd suggest also that the eaves would be lower than the side walls and thus you wouldn't be able to move it without lifting the roof first to clear the walls.

Hi Albert,

Have you thought of doing a flat roof with a slope so the rain to run off? That way the roof won’t obstruct the view any further.

Hi,

I would not go with the second design.

How much clearance you gets depends on the height of the pier and size (and length) of the telescope.

If the outriggers were sufficiently long, there would be more sky clearance.

My Observatory roof rolls off to the south-west, but I have trees and city glow there anyway. However the more 'normal' policy is to roll off to the north.

The one thing I see with it is rainfall and any debris from trees will fall in front of the doorway
