Posting this in case anyone into imaging is considerning a Vista machine.

Beware, no drivers for Toucam, SPC900 or NexImage. Philips say that they will not be writing any in the future.

The current drivers will not work in compatibility mode either.

Makes a good argument though Bart. It is not up to Vista (Microsoft) to make up the drivers for hardware - it is the job of the hardware manufacturer. I suppose the (apparent) logic is that Vista is relatively new, and as we have seen with the evolution of hardware technology, then I guess the ToUCam will be considered legacy in a matter of only a few years. It will take that long for Vista to become as popular I guess. As to the software likes of NexImage (is this software?) etc, I don't know why they don't move wth the times.

As a totally unrelated-to-astronomy opinion, I can only see Vista becoming 'popular' because it will be bundled with new machines. Sales so far have shown not many standalone copies have been purchased at all...

Why would people?

I was actually considering spending 89 Euro to run a copy in a VM on my Mac till I found out I'd have to buy the 300 Euro copy if I want to run it in a VM. Well bugger that!

I was only planning on getting it for testing purposes really, I have no real interest in Windows. I have played with Vista at work and I was un-impressed. Yea, it's a little shinier but it really doesn't do much more than XP did. It's not more usable, it's no more user friendly. Basically, it didn't steal nearly enough ideas from the Mac :)

Add to that the DRM they've infested the whole thing with and the fact that they've binned their stable and reliable network stack and replaced it with a completely new one that's shown itself to be really buggy during the betas I think Vista users are in for a rough ride. I'd say give it till at least service pack 1 before you risk it.

Also, my crappy and very old Mac Mini with 32MB graphics RAM can do all the fancy graphics that Vista can do yet for Vista they demand you have 128MB graphics card for the same thing. How can they be so innefficient? My money is on the DRM stuff making it all very bloated and slow.

Well I'll be sticking with XP & Linux.
Some people may get stuck with Vista though, even though nobody wants it.
I guess XP will start disappearing from new machines.
Bummer!

Yea ... MS are pushing it hard so they'll probably put the squees on manufacturers to stop offering XP ASAP.
