Windows Vista SP1 was created by paulevans

For anyone still pursuing Vista as their OS of choice, I will share my experience of the SP1 "upgrade".

Firstly, this is a pack of bugfixes, it doesn't come with any useful add-ons as far as I can tell.

Secondly, there were rumours that drivers are more rigidly controlled in SP1 which concerned me somewhat as I had managed to do that which some said was impossible, which was to make my trusty old Philips Toucams work!

One piece of good news is that the Toucam still works in K3CCDTools v1. However Craterlet can still capture images from it though the "Setup Camera" function doesn't work, so everything is Autoand 320x240 which is useless for astro applications.

The Meade LPI, which never worked with Meade Envision, but which did work with K3CCD and Craterlet, now no longer works at all! I will look to see if there's a fix.

My Video Editor, Adobe Premiere Elements 3, no longer works - it crashes on trying to create or open a project. How SP1 got through testing without anyone noticing this is quite extraordinary, it's a pretty mainstream application! And if anyone tells me to go and buy v4 they'll be told to bog off - my other editor is Cyberlink Power Director and that will have to do for the time being - at least it works!

There is good news - Starry Night Backyard 3.1 which used to stutter along like a dead tortoise to the point of being practically unusable now works perfectly.

The case for setting up an XP partition is looking pretty necessary!

To add to this, a reinstall of the driver has got the LPI up and running in both K3CCD and Craterlet though still not in Envisage.

Anyone else having fun with Vista? One gets the feeling that MS let it out much too soon although it has some very nice features.

I have two laptops both running XP. One I got free during a search on a building due for demolition which is acting as a reserve in case the first one goes belly up. Vista is toooo scary. Almost all of my hardware would go belly up. What was wrong with XP in the first place? that prompted this stupid carp.

Something to add to the list... Registax4 seems to be using about twice the amount of memory and is running very VERY slowly after SP1 installation.

Everybody had it already, so MS wasn't making nearly enough money.

Is it still possible to get a new computer with XP installed on it? My laptop is kinda old and is showing signs of going kaput soon. I get the impression that all the PC vendors are pushing Vista, and I really don't want it!

if you buy before from the big vendor such as dell etc you have up until 30th of june then they stop selling it as microsoft will stop supplying it to them. for the small white box vendors as microsoft calls them it is up until jan 31st i think next year.

Fundamental security short-comings that could only be fixed with a new OS. It's these very important and very much needed security enhancements that are causing such trouble with drivers. In older versions of Windows drivers could do just about anything, now they are subject to security restrictions and they have to be digitally signed.

However, the need for a ground-up security over-haul does not explain the insane level of bloat of Vista. The system requirements for it are insane.

My advice would be to buy a full copy of XP NOW, before you can't get them anymore. However, if you want to stay in the Windows eco-system you will have no choice but to go Vista at some stage. Once support is ended for XP you won't be able to safely use XP on any networked computer.

I got another laptop recently that had Vista Home, and nearly killed it, even with 1GB of RAM. After removing that and installing XP Pro, it's super duper now. Reluctantly, I add, XP Pro has to be Windoze best OS ever. Vista has been disappointing.

Looks like upgrading from XP to vista is like changing your 2 litre turbo diesel Mondeo for a 1 litre Hummer, it'll move but do so at a slow pace.

I also agree that XP pro is by far MS's best OS.

V3.xx, hard to believe now it was a program that ran in DOS !!
W95, it was only a matter of time before it froze and shutting down was always an adventure.
W98, well, what can I say, I got really good at quickly reading the blue screen of death before the PC auto rebooted.
W2k, was actually stable, but god help you if you needed to install anything that needed a driver at the time, not so bad these days.
W-Me, well, MS marketing gone mad, what was the point ??
XP, after years of thumping and hitting my PC with a hurly, it works pretty well these days on this OS! Am I going to update from something that actually works, not likely.!!

I use XP and i have it set NOT to automatically update cuz more often then not any updates mess it up.

XP is the most stable OS Microshite have ever had.

I have only ever used Microshite OS's but i have never updated them or allowed automatic fixes cuz they cause more problems then they solve.

It's interesting to note that MS have had so much trouble with this that they are offering downgrade rights to anyone who purchases a machine with Vista Business or Ultimate and wants to use XP Pro instead. The activation is just done by phone.

For some reason they only let you downgrade Vista Business & Vista Ultimate - not either of the home editions!

Next machine I get I'm going to 'upgrade' from Vista to XP

Jeebus! You do security updates right? If not your machine is probably riddled with key loggers and root-kits and all sorts of nasties.

You simply MUST update ANY OS. That goes for them ALL. Linux, Unix, Windows, Mac, the lot.

TBH, the reason we have so much spam is because there are incosiderate people not updating their computers. To be blunt, if you're on the net with an un-patched machine you're part of the problem.

Further to this I have carried out an experiment that looks like it may become permanent - I have installed Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) as a dual-boot on my laptop.

For all the standard web/office stuff it does everything Vista does only faster. It seems to be not quite so good at multimedia stuff but that's just a question of finding the right applications.

KStars is a great planetarium as is Stellarium and good to see Google Picasa works just as well on Linux as on Windows - only faster of course!

I've dabbled in Linux distros before of course, but this is the first one that has been really useful straight out of the box - even the wireless worked with not much more than a prod.

Worth a look if you're a bit cheesed off with Micorsoft's latest.
