Android apps recommendations? was created by markrgriffin

Hi All,

I'm relatively new to all of this, although I've had a facination with the sky from a very young age (about 35 years now).
I've tried a few apps on my phones over the years to help with locating stars and I'm currently using SKEye. It really helps to identify exactly what I'm looking at.

Just wondering if anybody has any other recomendations for astonomy related android apps.

Thanks,
Mark

Hi Mark,
I'm using SkEye as well. I used to use Google Sky but
Skeye seems much more detailed and useful for
"proper" amateur astronomers.

Some other apps that I use regularly with my astronomy are as follows:

A decent spirit level app for setting up my mount:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ne...yb2dhbWVzLmxldmVsIl0.

Compass app:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=co...0d2FyZS5jb21wYXNzIl0.

The indispensable Astro Panel weather app. Has never let me down yet, Thanks to Simon aka CarlightExpress for recommending it to me:
play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=Le...zLnNldmVuVGltZXIyIl0.

There are also some apps that claim to help with the polar alignment process but I haven't tried them out yet. Maybe someone else has?

Hi Will

The spirit level is a good idea, thanks. I also installed the Astro panel which looks like it could be indespensible if the forcasts are correct.
I think I'll stick with a real compass though as the compass apps I've tried previously have been a bit dodgey.
I'd forgotten google sky so thanks for that reminder.

clear skies,

astro panel is fairly accurate, i use it myself. there is also an app called telescope flashlight which basically turns the screen red and you can adjust the brightness, turns your phone into a red flashlight. there is also an app called space junk lite which shows satellites in the sky at the moment. meteor shower is another app that shows the current meteor showers visible.

Oh, that's a great one stepryan. The red flashlight app, I mean. There I was looking everywhere for red acetate to stick in front of my phones flashlight.
