Congratulations to Anthony for his picture appearing in the May 2004 issue of Sky & Telescope. It's an excellent picture of an analemma with some amazing ancient greek ruins in the foreground. It is truly an inspiring shot and deservedly gets a place in the gallery section of the magazine. The story of how Anthony made this analemma can be found on his website - perseus.gr I think, but I'm sure Anto will reply and give fuller details.

BTW - commiserations to S&T subscribers in the Dublin area. It's a really good new issue and the revamp improves an already excellent magazine. Hope the postal strike doesn't keep it from you for too long! :P

hi guys,

an excellent photo and, as Stephen said, a lot of hard work required. More of Anthony's work can be seen on www.perseus.gr while he has also got a very interesting article on Iridium flare photography in the March/April issue of Arcturus which can be downloaded from the FILES section of this website.

have a good weekend everyone!

Dear Friends,

A sincere thank you for the kind words. This particular analemma required three annual efforts to complete - the first was doomed well into the project thanks to the weather, the second was dead from day one due to film movement back and forth within the camera chamber and I only found out twelve months later and, finally, all the pieces fell into place perfectly during the third annual marathon.

Only a handful of these have ever been completed and I would love to hear that someone from this group pursues and successfully completes such a challenging and difficult project.

As noted in the Dec/2003 issue of Sky&Telescope, more men have landed on the moon - twelve in total as we all know - than have successfully completed the analemma.

For a glimpse into a very unique collection of analemma photos, I kindly direct you to www.perseus.gr/Astro-Solar-Analemma.htm .... also, for a wonderful writeup about the exclusiveness of the "analemma club", please see the excellent article by Dennis di Cicco (the first person to ever image the analemma in 1979) in the March/2000 issue of S&T, for it is there that I got the inspiration to pursue this multi-year project.

Best wishes from Greece to all my Irish friends!

Anthony.

PS. I made the mistake ( :D ) of pursuing eleven analemmas which represent the complete gamut from sunrise to sunset. Six of these are available at the above-named link; another two are confirmed to be successful and will be available shortly; yet another due are due to complete (hopefully successfully) next month; and the final analemma failed again in 2003 and a fourth annual effort is already underway and should be ready (?) later this year.

Shane,

Thank you for the exposure (please excuse the pun) and the kind words. For a preview as to what is the analemma and the analytical issues involved if and when pursuing such a project, please see www.perseus.gr/Astro-Tips-Analemma.htm ...
