Hey woodwizard i really like the image nice to see an old favourite in a different light. As you suggested it is over processed a little bit and the usuall problem of overexposing the trapezium while trying to get detail from the fainter surroundings. Here's a link that you may find useful in overcoming this problem www.astropix.com/HTML/J_DIGIT/TOC_DIG.HTM

ps: love the web site
oh wise man why is the universe so perfect?ah because symmetry loves herself.

Dogstar, I know the trap is blown out as this is 6-10 min exposures in H-Alpha. Here is a Trap photo from last year.
What I meant by over processed is the stars have dark donuts around them.

Its a very good image there Tom.
Would you consider darkening the background (yellow M42) a tad, it might bring out the nebula even more....

Dave, the yellowish M42 is the native colour using the Baader 7nm H-Alpha filter and Canon 350D modified in B/W mode. The colour was not adjusted in the processing.
Will be giving it a go with another processing when I get home from work.

Hi Tom,
What a great image that is I love the detail Great set up to. I'm looking at getting a side by side plate to .I think The C14 is to high an F ratio so the plan is to have to smaler scopes on the CGE mount for the deep sky imaging and the C14 for the planets. here is my set up. Happy new year.

Hi Carl, thanks for the comments. I to have a 14"er but a Meade. I have found it makes a good scope for the medium to small DSO's with the 6.3 focal reducer and my Canon 350D.
What a great setup you have. Soon I'll be getting a solid vinyl shed that will roll off as a whole unit. When rolled back for viewing will be able to close the doors for warmth and comfort. Then just roll back into closed position to protect scope and other equipment. This will give be both a roll off roof observatory and a roll off shed observatory.

Soon to be the ASH CLUSTER OBSERVATORIES

My worst light pollution is in my NNW skies. Sky glow from Philadelphia. My skies to the east and south are good. Many of nights can see the Milky Way. But as we all wish, skies could be so much better.

That colour image just blows me away still. Brightness balance is perfect. I mean, filament detail in the Trapezium, even in that small size, is really cool.

Tom,

That is an excellent image. The trapezium is always a pain in the butt. Either ignore it (seriously!) or get a small series of 30-secs subs and incorporate them into the final image.

Either way this image is a keeper. I would certainly not turn my back on it!

I spent more time on the H-Alpha image. A total reprocessing. I think it came out alittle better.
