Generally Frank, you make a request to the Site Admin, and they will remove/delete your account. Or, in other cases, very dormant accounts would also be deleted in the same fashion, if the user base was huge.

Thinking of leaving us??

What do you mean by "un-register?"

You can turn off recieving emails in the User Control Panel ( www.irishastronomy.org/community/userCP/index.php ) and the phpBB Profile page ( www.irishastronomy.org/boards/profile.php?mode=editprofile )

The site contents are on the Internet. Bad Idea!

The site needs to be Google'd but internally only!!!!

"un-register" - nice for "leave".

I'm now totally lost?????

"The Home of Irish Astronomy on the Web" - that's our tag line .... says it all really, why would we want not want to be on the web?

Do you think that the fact that what you say here can actually be read makes it a bad place? :?: :?

As I see it it's exactly the availability and searchability of this place that gives it it's power. We get most of our members from people who do a search for something and google points them to a very useful post here and they say "hey, these guys know some useful stuff and are happy to share it to help out, I think I'll get involved".

What's the point in answering someone's questions in a forum that is purly private?

To leave you just .... leave .... you stop posting or taking part, simple as that.

Perhaps the option to deregister should be included in member’s profile. 8)

I am on several "mailing lists" where the contents are not spread over the Internet. I have no problem with the other webs on this site.

That's all I'm saying!

Have you guys thought this through!

Frank,
I'm not sure I follow here...perhaps you could expand a little?

What would you see as the advantages of not having the info on the internet?
In what form do your other "mailing lists" operate in? Are they e-mail only?

This place was set up with the express intention of being an online bulletin board .... what is there to think through? As I have said before this is not a mailing list and is not trying to be one. It is a bulletinboard system and is doing an excellent job at being one.

Guys and Gals,

It's simple.
A user wants to leave.Let him go.Take whatever steps are necessary to close his account and let him go.
No reflection on anyone involved in the site and certainly no need for anyone to increase their blood pressure.

Keep up the great work!

Don

I really must think of something interesting to use as a tag line!

Don,
I suppose the reason why we're asking the questions is so that if there is a fault/flaw in the form of the website, then it might allow us to improve it, if possible. It's not meant in any way to harrase the guy.

I dont believe anyone is harrassing him but I do not think that it can be constructive to continue to ask any further.Honestly.

I think it makes sense to have an opt out / close account policy. I am sure that the registered data controller of this site will agree, that it's in his, this sites, and the public's interest that DPA policy is adhered to.

We have a registered Data Protection controller don't we ???

And the process is (apparently) to ask the webmaster to delete your account (which Bart is looking after with Frank offline). The software itself doesnt provide it which is a pity, but there is no legal requirement for it to have to either, asking the web team is perfectly acceptable.

The only personal data we keep is what you put in to register, ie an email address, and password. That is the only extent to which we are a data controller. We are not required to register, though obviously we do have to follow the data protection rules. Anything that people post or put in signatures etc. is outside of that remit and can be considered entered into the public domain.

Cheers,

No harassment was intended, this is a request which just hasnt happened before, so the powers that be need to figure out exactly what to do.

The user Frank Concannon has been deleted at his own request.

I guess we will never know why having a public bulletin board be public is a "bad idea" .... oh well
