Hmmmm......What to view? was created by Matthew C
HI guys!
As some of ye know i got an lx90 recently! ive had it out twice and am now very used to its controls!(I pick stuff up VERY fast!) I was wondering:
What to view?
I Know all these galaxies and nebulae are fantastic to image! But what is the best stuff in the sky to view as in observing? The Orion nebula is the obvious one and have seen it on NUMEROUS occasions! Have yet to see jupiter mars venus or neptune in a big scope so there a given.star clusters are lovely and have seen a fair few! Havent seen a whole lot of deep sky! What do ye recommend for visual observing?
WOW what alot of waffling i just did!
Thanks in advance!
Matt

Matthew,

Some of my favourites around this time of year are;

M81/M82 Galaxies in Ursa Major
M51 Galaxy in ursa major.
NGC2392 - The eskimo Nebula in Gemini.
M65/M66/NGC 3628 The Leo Triplet of galaxies

As you can see I do like galaxies:)

also

M3 - Globular cluster in bootes

If you are looking for an asteroid to vie, 20 Massalia is well placed in Cancer right now.

I suggest you download something like Cartes du Ciel which will show you a lot more things to view.

Regards and Clear Skies,

Dave.

AT this time of year I'd make the following recommendations:

Open Clusters:
M35,36,37&38 in Gemini/Auriga

Globular Clusters:
Only really M3 around and you'll have to stay up fairly late for that one.

Galaxies:
M81 & M82

Matthew, I'd also suggest having a listen to the sky guide on the podcast, I generally go through the nicest objects in the constellation that are up in any particular month. You can get the MP3 at www.irishastronomy.org/podcast
