Thats a bit mad John, an 11" scope is a very respectable scope, many go through their astronomy/observing careers with a much smaller scope.
In the world of really big Dobs, a 20" is practically a starter scope.! There are alot bigger scopes then a 20" out there.

When I was a kid, and without giving my age away  a 10" reflector was considered a large scope. These days it very decent but average. Its the times we live in I guess-not that I'm being nostalgic, amateur astronomy has never been as affordable or sophisticated before. :) I take your point about smaller scopes though-look what a decent 8" scope with a ccd camera can do compared to a 16" scope (or larger) with film 15 years ago...Life is good.

I was given an 8.5" mirror blank, made from unltra low-expansion pyrex, 12 years ago. I was told then that it would cost as much as the 2 of the Orion Optics 8" sets I bought that year to make my scope. Today, this glass is almost as standard.

You see, it is when there is both demand plus competition that heats up the market in favour of the consumer. Just look back through your old issues of S&T and see the prices of the old LX200 series 10 years ago compared to now!
