Planetarium software was created by CaptainPlanet
I use Stellarium and find it very good in general.

I've only recently discovered Microsoft's WorldWide Telescope ( www.worldwidetelescope.org ) and I'm still getting to grips with all of it's features. It looks like a very powerful resource.

Are there any other decent planterariums that people can't live without?

What is Starry Nights Pro like and what advantages does it have over the free planitariums?

I dont know what it is and i'm guessing it has no advantages over free software programs.

Stellarium is the BEST i have found. I also use Celestron's "My Sky".......but for me Stellarium is the best.

I did download Microsoft telescope but couldnt make head nor tails of it and it ran very slow on my system..................which was a surprise.

Celestia is another free program ( i have it but not used it). I think it is more of a virtual tour of the solar system rather then a star chart.

Do yourselves a favor and get an early version of starry night.
Although Stellarium looks good and is great coz it's free,
For me SN is the best.

In fairness Paul you can't guess it has no advantages over free programmes when in the same sentance you admit you don't know what it is.

Too true......................

But at the end of the day dont they all do the same job?

Why pay for a star chart program when free software is readily available online which does the same job?

As i said................Stellarium is free and just about the best there is.
