The North Dublin Astronomy Club was created by JohnC2009
Hello all,

I have been looking for contact details for the The North Dublin Astronomy
club but can't seem to find anything. If anyone had and numbers
or web addresses I'd be grateful.

Many thanks,

John

Hi John,

There is no official club in North Dublin..There was a lot of talk about setting one up between people here and on boards.ie. Everyone wanted a club but when we set up a date to meet 3 people showed up and one of them was me. I've come to realize people want a club but don't want to get up off there asses to do anything about it so I gave up on the idea. I know some lads meet out in Skerries from time to time but I don't have their numbers.

If anyone is planning a session in Skerries please post up a notice on the forum, it would be great if we could get a regular group out there.

I went out there on my own once, just after buying my first scope (a Dob).

An Guarda Siochana were first over - I suspect to make sure this strange guy in the carpark wasn't carrying military hardware!

Next up was a group probably in their late teens and a little worse for wear (they were up at Funtasia earlier that night if I remember correctly)!

Funny thing was I ended up demonstrating the scope and some of the night sky highlights to both for about half an hour or so, they seemed genuinely interested!!

So if there is a member of An Guarda Siochana or someone in their early 20s on the forum who took up the hobby after a night at Skerries car park please let me know - I'm committed to astronomy outreach you know!

Thats a real shame.
I understand totally though.
A few years back SAC almost disbanded but
for a few dedicated members that worked hard to breathe new life
into the old dog and it's paid off bigtime.

When I initally saw the post I was thinking it was
going to be an announcment that it was up and running...

it's hard to get people to put in the time it takes
to run a successful club.
The initial push is the hardest...

Sorry for the confusion guy, I was under the impression it was already
up and running for some time. Well, if it help, I am hoping to get
out to Skerries in the near future and would love to arrange it so
that it coincides with anyone else heading out!!!

Thanks again,

John

These astronomy clubs are damn hard I can tell you.
You've got to keep the momentum going and keep a critical mass of membership and keep everyone interested and balance the books, mind the club equipment and organise speakers + meetings, alot goes on and its too much for one person to carry.
But when it works, its great!
