Total Lunar Eclipse - 16 May 2022 was created by flt158
Would you recommend a location for the upcoming Total Lunar Eclipse?
It is due to occur during the early hours of next Monday morning 16th May.
The Moon will be in Libra, and therefore very low to the south western to west horizon.
Would the Sugarloaf car park be any good?
Of course we will have to check out the weather.
Clear skies will be vital for this event.
Best regards from Aubrey.

You might be luckier farther north.

The other option would be to walk up the Sugarloaf a bit to gain some altitude.
The weather doesn't look too good though.

It's quite encouraging!
I vaguely remember where Lough Dan is in Wicklow from many years ago.
Of course I will phone you for the directions.
But in the meantime, we will all keep an eye on the weather for the early Monday morning.
Very best regards from Aubrey.

Because there is too much rain coming after midnight, I will not be observing the Total Lunar Eclipse.
I would like to thank Michael and Finbarr for their comments.
There is going to be a lot of rain until Thursday.
Maybe then will we have some clear skies,
Best regards from Aubrey.

On a related note, my new eyepiece arrived today. I've never seen anything like it. It's a 17mm with a 2 inch barrel, but the 2inch can be unscrewed to reveal a 1.25 inch barrel underneath it - very handy!
I might even get the chance to try it out tonight.
Clear skies,
Darren.

I am very pleased you have a friend in South Africa who saw and imaged the eclipse.
And I'm also very pleased you have received a 2" eyepiece today.
Sadly we have so much high cloud over Dublin tonight (Monday).
And I'm not sure when we are due to have clear night skies.
Funny! We have plenty of sunny afternoons but cloudy nights after sunsets.
I advise everyone here to keep an eye on their favourite weather websites.
Clear skies from Aubrey.

Many thnaks for your message.
No joy last night, so I'll have to wait until the next clear night to give the new eyepiece a go.
When will that be? Judging by the forecast over on Met Eireann it won't be anytime soon : (
Chat soon,
Darren.

We might, or then again, we might have an hour of clear skies before midnight.
How frustrating it all is!
Best thing to do is: just look out the window, and if it's clear out we go.
Best regards from Aubrey.

I hope so as I always enjoy being down at the Sugar Loaf.
Clear skies, who knows?

Many thanks for the update...it's clear here too. Pity, I can't get out tonight.
If you are observing tonight, I hope you have good time.
Clear skies,

Sorry to hear weather conditions in Ireland were not good for the eclipse.
Here in Massachusetts, the weather was generally poor. However, Sara and myself did manage to observe some of both the partial and total phases during gaps in the cloud of varying quality. It was a rather dark eclipse during totality (Danjon = 2).
The view from my Observatory in MA was blocked by trees. So I observed from the back of the garden.
Please see my website for a few images.
John
