Hi all

Click on the above link to see a nice animation of the comet supplied by an observer on the MPML. Whats interesting to me is that it shows an ion tail AND dust tail..something i suspected visualy but declined to mention at the time. What do you think of the animation?

Hi Dave

If you havent read my other thread on this comet i hinted that maybe you could capture an animation of Pojmanski or 73P now below Arcturus..it would be the first in Ireland again! :D

Sorry Martin - I missed that one!

Crikey - yet another challenge from you! Haven't let you down yet but... I recently resited the 1200 (just a few meters) so I need to polar align again (doh!) so that'll take some time. And added to that, weatehr reports for the next week are woeful.

Funnilly enough, I nearly imaged a comet on Friday night but I was too wasted on writing MPC reports

If I get J65 upa and running sharpish and we get the weather, I'll give it a lash. Fair enough?

Cheers

I'd really like to see a few more folks here coming up with some Irish Firsts'

We should have a prize for the first Irish animation of this comet.... That'd get the competition going :D

Anyhow, seeing as you are buttering me up, I'll give it a lash :D

Cheers

Lovely image, and yet another green comet, we had a number of those 2 or so years back, or are they all green?

The green is due to Cynagen (dont think i spelt that correct) . Alot of gassy comets emit either blue or green colours when close to the sun. Dusty comets are manily white/gold or even red!

One of the great comets in historical records was blood red in colour and appearently a frightening sight as it took up much of the sky and described as looking like a dragon..would love to see one of those babies!

here's hoping the full Messier Marathon in Turkey will be a first! If tonight's penumbral is clouded out then I'm on for an IFAS lunar eclipse expedition next year :D . . . think my last lunar eclipse was 1992. Some of the SDAS people have seen THREE total solar eclipses and never seen a lunar one . . . Irish weather :(

the detection of cyanogen in comet Halley in 1910 caused a bit of a panic when astronomers announced the Earth would actually pass through the tail of the comet that year. Apparently some enterprising punter did a roaring trade in "Comet Pills" that would counter the effect of the poisonous gas. More info on the episode in Carl Sagan and Ann Druyan's book "Comet".

Thats a great book John isnt it. I have one of the old versions with all the lovely images included. I heard the updated version does not have these.
