We also have an annular eclipse completely visible in the late 2020's ....

so you reckon you'll still be around for that one old fella?

I should be comfortably just into my 70's ... as a precautionary measure, I may just hit the annular eclipse at the start of 2009. :D

That's 2061. We've all seen your photo. Which piece of the coffin interior do you plan in "hanging on" to Paul?

PRICELESS! :D

Depending on which side of Jan 14 it shows up, I will be 103 or 104. Significant difference once you get that far .... assuming you get that far.

Michael,

It seems we will be sharing the 14-hr stopover between connecting flights in Moscow upon our return.

My schedule is as follows:

(1) Athens - Moscow @ July 29th and 13:40 (Aeroflot, SU 296)
(2) Moscow - Novo @ July 29th and 22:35 (Aeroflot, SU 809)

--- in Novo for the nights of Wed-Friday July 30-Aug 1/2008

(3) Novo - Moscow @ Aug 2nd and 18:35 (Aeroflot, SU 806)
(4) Moscow - Athens @ Aug 3rd and 09:30 (Aeroflot, SU 295)

This schedule is being shared by members of the Greek mafia and including the Godfather (Vaggelis Tsamis).

It will be a grand time while in Novo ... and I am sure on the plane back and forth as well.

Its bad enough that we have the russian mafia to contend with, but now we have the greeks in town, the place is looking decidedly dangerous.

Question for the eclipse:
I was wondering if there is an electronic thermometer (or a mini weather station) that can record the temperature, so that I can get a Temperature-Time curve of the eclipse. Any weather guys here?
Does anyone have a device like this?
Is it possiple to take temp measurements every 15 sec or so?
Any advise would be appreciated.

I decided I wanted to try and take some images of the upcoming eclipse and so started taking some test images this evening to figure out the focal length of lens I want to use. Anway, below is a test image. No processing done at all, just re-sized down as it's only a test image. It's taken with 400d and Canon 100-400mm L IS USM lens at 400mm. I'm hoping to use this in Russia to capture the corona. Will the corona fit in completely at this focal length or should I perhaps use the lens at 300mm instead?

One thing I noticed that the UV filter causes an internal reflection so this MUST be taken off when using taking images with camera lenses for astronomical purposes involving bright targets such as the moon, and probably the sun and brighter planets too. On this image it's taken off, but on other images, there was a distinct ghost image.

Hi Michael,

I plan to use my Tak FSQ at its native focal length of 530 mm which means your 400 mm should be fine. I would not pursue anything at 300 mm since you will be losing detail with the excessively large field of view.

If you check around the 'net, you will find that the FSQ was used for many extended corona shots which sets both of us at ease.

Michael,
400mm is fine.
I will use a Nikon D70s and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 APO lens, WITH a 2X converter, so I get 400.
