Conjunction, Moon, Venus, Playides & Haydes. 19th April

13 years 5 months ago #44099 by Frank Ryan
For anyone interested....
There is a nice conjunction taking place twords the end of April.
The Moon (thin crescent), Venus, The Playides & Haydes will be in or
around the same neck of the woods around the 19th of April.

This should afford an opportunity to any visual observers or astrophotographers a chance to catch a nice scene.

(bellow is a screen grab from Stellarium of the night in question)

Yep, looks like a nice photo-op Frank. Though what the map doesn't show is that it will be quite hard to get contrast due to the twilight - Venus is bright enough to be seen but M45 will be much harder.

Clear skies,

Paul.

What will be difficult here is their respective magnitudes and trying to capture different levels of detail from the brilliant Moon and Venus to the much dimmer Pleaides. The best thing to do here would be to capture a range of exposures.

I'm hoping to catch some earthshine.
The thought had also crossed my mind to do multi exposures and
the combine them to show all the objects...
we'll see...

Getting the exposure and contrast right for all the different objects - 2 clusters, Venus and the Moon, and the background stars, so that they all show up perfectly will be pretty much impossible... so why not cheat a little and photograph that region with and without the Moon (two shots a couple of hours apart) with one exposure aimed at capturing the best detail on the moon. In PaintShop or PhotoShop, subtract the difference between the two images to loose the moon in both (but leave the stars and Venus) and then drop a cut-out of the Moon back in, in its correct position.

A little creativity can produce beautiful results... and have appeared in the gallery pages of Kiss&Tel many times!

Right, well, the weather stayed OK for a while...
here is the first one I took...

I could just about see Haydes but I had to stroll 5min down the road to
get it all in frame....Murphys Law, by the time I got there it had clouded out....
Arrrah!
Anyway...

There ye go.
Moon (earthshine illuminated , Venus and the Magnificent 7.)

My Dad and I sat out on the front step of the house this evening
waiting to see who'd be the first to see venus...
well the crescent moon was a dead giveaway but..then ...
out strolled my ma and went ''What's that star there called?''
...
yeah...

Frank,

 Well done, well balanced and the only thing missing is atmosphere detail in Venus  . Thats all I can say.

Absolutely stunning to watch last night. I nearly crashed the car into workaround 11pm because the view infront of me was stunning (heading into Tullamore on the Portarlington road anyone? 4.5 miles of dead straight smooth road, with the conjunction right in front of you. Damn those road rules about watching where you're going!!)

The amount of Earthshine visible was really amazing. Even so late at night. I wish I wasn't working last night to have enjoyed it more.

:D

By the way, did anyone spotany Lyrids while they were out observing?

Here is a shot of Venus from last night also.

1min AVI Taken usingan ETX-125,
Philips webcam with IR cut filter,
2x Barlow,
Processed in Registax.

Yeah Seanie,
The earthshine was very noticable, more so before dark.
I have a few earlier shots from when I was setting up and I got Haydes in
as well but its very faint.

No Lyrids by the way.

Lovely shots!

I had actually completely forgotten about it and it was a pleasant surprise when I popped outside and was greeted with this sight!

Rather surprised myself......as to good how they turned out...

Then I tried these photographs on the way home to waterford from dublin last night...... a few miles north of castledermot, much darker skies... and alot less hassle (despite the trucks)!!!

Great images lads.
I had a look at it that night, we didn't have cloud for a change.!
The earthshine was very obvious, a nice apparition.
