Yes thats what causes 'Alexanders Dark Band' but the explanation i gave explains why the inside of the primary bow is so bright!
No, the interior being bright is exact the same thing as Alexander's dark band, the light that's missing from the band ends up in the middle. You can't just get rid of the light, it has to go somewhere!!!!

What we really need here is a selective way of "seeing" new posts, i.e. automatically excluding Seanie or whoever from ever seeing atmospheric (for example) posts/threads when he clicks on the "View posts since last visit" button.

This feature would solve alot of problems.

The ability to ignore a topic (or a user (I'd never have to read one of Seanies posts ever again!)) would be great.

Seriously, to be able to exclude WEATHER phenomena on an Astronomy board would be good...
...to not have the stuff pop up regularly would be even better.
Maybe I can start adding pictures of my car seen at night with the Plough overhead?

People have had no problems considering satelite observing Astronomy, it isn't, it's just plane spotting really. Ban that. NLCs are obviusly not acceptable either, they are just clouds, ban those. Shooting stars, they are not in space, ban those. Aurorae, nope, happen in the atmosphere, out with that too. If that's the line the majority think these boards should take, fair enough but I doubt I'd be hanging around too long under that regime.
What exactly is the difference between the interactions of the sun, a STAR, and the atmosphere (a dense nebula) and 'real astronomy'?
As for the example of posting pictures of your car, should you shoot it into orbit or build a telescope onto it then by all means go for it.
Bring back the separate board and let those of us who enjoy this aspect of sky watching enjoy it and stop telling us we're not astronomers because we don't fit your deffinition. Live and let live!
As for a mod ot ignore people, that idea is quite frankly discusting. Talk about an un-friendly atmosphere!

Na seaine im only joking! In a more serious note, how many times has this sort of thread been started. Its not appealing for new people to post, it's not friendly and it really needs to come to a hault. Can this be the last thread or last section of remarks...?

Atmospheric optics is no more weather than meteors or aurorea.............
I think there is a lack of understanding here!
Without sounding bitchy...
Atmospherics concern phenomenae that occur due to the presence of an atmosphere, and interaction of from external sources, some astronomical
Weather phenomenae occur within our atmosphere, from all kinds of forces - of nature.
Aurorae and meteors can be classified as atmospheric, as their origin is purely astronomical or astrophysical, and not from within or below our atmosphere.
Now, you might say "sure the bloody sun is causing rainbows". True, but rainbows don't come from the sun. Aurorae do. The sun just happens to be in the way while it is raining (for the most part). Therefore I'd put rainbows in the same class as other weather-based phenomenae, not atmospheric.
And Noctilucent Clouds have some rather strong evidence that their formation is, for the greater part, attributed to meteoroid dust in the highest levels of our atmosphere. If it wasn't for shooting stars, chances are we wouldn't have NLC's. Atmospheric.
Sun Pillars, Moon Halos, NLCs, even aurorae - Atmospheric
Rainbows, Clouds, Crepescular Rays, and even Sundogs - Weather.
Thats something I have often understood between the two - and its not made up.
So, I'll let Martin and Conor bash me up now!

Although rainbows and the other optical effects fit poorly into Astronomy, they fit even more poorly into weather.
Rainbows and "normal" clouds are not regular astronomy as far as I'm concerned, no offence is meant here lads, posts about them need to be placed in the correct forum.
PLEASE GIVE US A WEATHER SECTION so we can avoid this from happening again..

That could still be an issue.
Idea:
It was mentioned before by someone to me, to mention to you guys that you should start a blog of your photographic endeavours. There are many free blog sites on the web (for those that don't know, its basically an online diary for 'everything'). There's nothing wrong, at all, with showing off! But, while you could post to your blogs to your hearts content, that would be the more relevant place (and other weather-based sites, as I have seen you both frequent) to put in the weather-related pictures, not here, per say.
We would then get to see more of your astronomy-based ones, and not have these bitching sessions over rainbows and clouds!
I know you guys like photography, as many others here do, but a line does have to be drawn as to what can be truly astronomical and what is not. It doesn't have to be taken as cencorship either, so please cut me some slack! These are an open boards, for everybody, but there is a specific theme going on in here!

Now, I'm only expressing a personal opinion here and I'm not going to judge anyone or cast tacit dispertions... Bear with me...
You all know that I've taken a few images of asteroids and stitched them together as animations. I have probably four or five times the number that I posted. I figured that after about the fourth animation most folks had seen enough and I didn't want to get to the stage where folks became immune to the 'wonder' of how visibly mobile our solar system is. After all, you only need to see a white dot move across a star field 3 or 4 times before you get the picture. After that, there's a danger of the audience switching off.
Of course, there is a situation where I would post an animation that showed, say, an interesting asteroid animation. Perhaps one named after an Irish astronomer (Corvan, McConnel, Mckenna) etc becasue they have a further intrinsic local interest. Or perhaps the asteroid that will hit Athlone next Thursday tea-time.
But unless there is an intrinsic value, I won't post the usual suspects. By doing so, I also leave 'room' for others to post asteroid animations without fear of being ignored because folks had 'tuned out' of that topic. I would gladly view lots of asteroids animations from others but I would be happy to accept that some on the boards have no interest. Fair enough - its give and take, a free world, each to his own etc.
I'm not making a judgement here just telling you the decisions I made on posting my own brand of image. Take from it what you will - except critisism, because that it ain't.
As far as weather, atmospherics etc goes, personally I have no objection to them being posted in a relevent forum. Not because I don't want to see them but because I can empathise with those who might not want to see them.
Anhow, I'm off to trawl the net to see if I can find an image of a Leprauchaun dickie-bow

You complain about seeing too much soo called 'weather' images and no astronomy. Where is your images??? You love to get a good dig in where ever you can. To be honest i think your are doing very little for this forum! Your bringing it down with your smart comments and pittyfull replies. Your stats as a Moderator has already been talked about and you were nearly taken off, only for martin to come to the rescue and say you could stay. You say others have been talking about us on here? Is there some sort of discussion going on behind our back? Who are these other people, if they feel so strong about it then they should voice there oponion. Really the only bitching going on is you crying over what you want but im sorry to tell you seanie, the bows & atmos are here to stay!

However, Dave Mc did raise a valid point about posting constantly on the same topic on a near-daily basis. A point can arise where people may get tired of them. However, in your (Martin & Conor) defence, it is very easy for people to just not click on these topics. You run the risk of "crying wolf" perhaps - what i mean is that people may decide not to click on your posts and miss an exceptional sun halo, or whatever, because of the volume. Perhaps cherrypicking the best of them would be an idea...
I would also add that a few people here need to get a grip on reality and grow up a little. This isn't the first time this issue has arisen. If this is all they have to worry about....

Lets cut to the chase here, I do not think they should be in this forum, they should be in an atmospherics/weather forum, not the observing reports forum, thats my opinion. Are you saying then you disagree with them on the forum?
I second Michaels comments, if I were to put a pick of everthing I took in the sky up here, I would have something up every week, but I dont. I only put up unusual images or ones I particularily like, remember the M42 fatigue...
I look outside and see grey cloud and rain, I open this astronomy site to get some sort of respite and find more damn clouds and rainbows, what irony.

Is this site going to have that facility? As in could we at some point have a blog for specific topics, where experts in those topics could post about events?
eg. for atmospherics Martin, Conor, JohnF et. al. could have rights to post about current atmospherics and aurorae?
Just a thought the web team might like to look at.

Dave some people like them others dont? Look at the images...there is replies & there is views. We get no where with a 50/50 vote on what can and cant go on the forums. I will asked the question again (we were already told we can) Can we post these images on the forum?
If you're asking me then you're asking the wrong person. I have no say here as I'm not a policy maker here, so post away to your hearts content if you wish.
