NLC's! was created by martinastro
Hi all

Last night i got my very first display of Noctilucent clouds in 2006! My sister and i were walking in the country before dawn when at 02.45 we spotted a very faint, diffuse white glowing NLC formation very low near the horizon stretching from the N to NE sky through sections of Auriga, Perseus and Pisces. Type 1 brigntness and type 1 Veil like structure. The brightening dawn sky soon washed them out. I got my images up on the UK NLC homepage were i noticed that another observer from England also seen a possible display at night fall. Got 2 images at ISO200/5 sec exposure...

Martin - myself and Fiona were in Galway last weekend and on the Saturday night, about 11.20 to midnight, we looked to the north and the horizon line was a fairly bright silvery white with what looked like typical twilight colours above it. I *thought* it may have been noctilucent clouds but I wasn't sure. It could have been another atmospheric effect but it was definately brighter than I'd usually been accustomed to. What we saw was similar to your images but it more silvery/white.

Unfortunately, I had no camera with me... Any ideas? NLC's?

Cheers

Dave

For what it's worth it certainly sounds like NLCs to me!

At the risk of getting shot, I have to say Martin that I dont see any noctilucent clouds in either of those images. i see normal dark clouds against the sky near the horizon.
To me it looks like a nice sunset well into the twilight with typical bright blue, white and yellow horizon hues.

So it's not just me who was not too sure about those images. The clouds are definitely not NLCs, the are not Luminescent .... I thought that perhaps the silvery band might be NLC and that the image just didn't show them very luminously.

I've stared long as this part of the image, I just dont see what I'd expect NLC to look like, this looks like a blending of the sky.
Its possible that the image is too underexposed to pick up very faint NLCs, I just dont see them here.
