Webmaster Edit: Please see Seanie Morris's post (#13) further down dated June 28th 2007

I guess since a lot of people won't have seen NLC's before it might be worth putting up some of the better images (imo) from the past couple of years to show you what to look out for.

Jeez - not more noctilucent clouds. I'm really fed up of you guys always posting these images - they're clouds. Duh. About as interesting as a blooming animated asteroid

They might be clouds Dave, but they do look Cool - like a ghostly glow hanging above the northern horizon. They can really catch you by surprise.

Shane - not having read the 6 pgaes worth of IFAS ruminations on 'bows' its not surprising that you've missed the irony of my post

FWIW - I think the images below, especially Dave L's are just stunning. I think I may have seen NLC's last weekend and if that's what they were, I agree - certainly caught me by surprise.

Ah, what makes these clouds special is how infrequent they can be seen. I mean, sometimes they are considered to be seen more frequently during our summers around times on increased meteor activity.

The most special of all the clouds, because you hardly get to see them!

I like these type of clouds, they will never rain on you .
You can spend thousands of euros on astro equipment and its the simple handheld shot that wins out. :)

Interesting that all the above images were (I think) all taken on the one night, of the same display. So for completeness here is the same night as seen from Kerry.

This was taken on 35mm film and is a panorama of 3 images through a 28mm lens. It spans about 110degrees of the north West horizon!

Flicking back and forth quickly, I can see similar features between your image (Michael) and mine. Its very interesting to see what a slight differance in latitude makes.

Ref: albertw's first post in this thread.

As can be seen from the first post of this thread, our recent hosting move (May 2007) caused the loss of the Files section (still in storage), and thus some broken links. Thanks to Brian for the heads-up post .

As a result, for those of you looking to see what Noctilucent Clouds look like, here you go:

If anyone would like to share any recent NLC shots they took, please add them to your own post in this Atmospheric Phenomenae forum.

once people post up images this season we'll change this thread. For the moment please put images up image hosting sites, the preference is for www.flickr.com with tag of 'irishastronomy'.

In the mean time check out www.flickr.com/groups/noctilucent_clouds/pool/

A short animation of a display in July 2006. Visible even through my dire light pollution in south Dublin.

Albert,
post up again what you did to take this. Since there are folks online here that have digital SLR's that can take longer exposures in the order of seconds (and then use them to stitch together like this in a movie), I think it makes for interesting photography.
