Very very nice display indeed!
One of the brightest I've ever seen.
Only just faded.
I'm sure you will catch more in a few hours.
I'm off to bed though!
Dave!
By the time I got out to Shannon they had grown and
become so bright I could hardly believe we stood for an hour
in that car park looking out for them!
They were right there all the time just obscured by the hotel!

This technique should be handy when we get a better display!

Yip.

Looked very bright in Dublin at abut 1.30 am this morning. Not a lot of structure to it, then again I was looking over the city, but as you say it was exceptionally bright.

And here's one from towards the end where you can see the display through the remaining few gaps in the clouds....
More proof of concept than a display of lovely pictures!

Unluck with the clouds guy's, i had a clear view for
most of the night.I didn't notice them untill about 11.30
the above images were all taken about midnight. It's
the first time I've caught a NLC on camera and what
a display it was, so bright. They were all taken at the
mouth of the river Boyne,Mornington, Co Meath.

Real vivid colours.
I particularly like the use of the foreground in the second image - what is that building anyway?
You were fortuanate to have such clear skies.

a foreground i was afraid to travel to far in case
the clouds rolled in and i thought about the light house
which is only 5 min away from my front door

It's not used any more but it was there to show
the entrance to the river, it's cool it kind a looks
like an Apollo lunar Module

me an idea for an image.

Thanks Micheal, i was running around looking for
a foreground i was afraid to travel to far in case
the clouds rolled in and i thought about the light house
which is only 5 min away from my front door
It's not used any more but it was there to show
the entrance to the river, it's cool it kind a looks

me an idea for an image.
I was thinking it must be a lighthouse, but looked kinda wierd!

Excellent choice of a foreground object!

it in an image i think it's a case of takeing it for granted
as i have been passing it almost everyday for most of
my life.Although i have though about useing as a foreground
over the years but just never got around to it and so thanks
to that NLC display last night i finally have.

The 2nd image is the closest to the actual colours of the display.
(any way you could link to a full size shot?)
Well done on capturing NLC's first go.

the money about the colour of the second image.
It's the only one with a nice foreground so i spent
a little more time processing it although it didn't need
much.I took 61 images and i'm a wee bit busy and
find it hard to try and sit down processing images
as i'm sure you well know but i will get around to it
sooner rather than later

Oh I've put the images up on my gallery here www.webtreatz.com/

I saw the display myself from down at the folks place in Dromineer, N. Tipp. They were my first display seen in quite some time and it was nice sit by the lake and watch them for 15 minutes before heading home.

Im just wondering if there is a website that tells you when/if an NLC display is in action?
I don't think there is John, as these kinds of clouds are pretty much a localised event covering only a couple hundred miles. They probably exist all the time, it is down to local conditions that make them visible. For example, you have seen here that for some of the displays, observers in Northern Ireland would have seen a much better display at the same time then those in southwest Ireland.
Some of us here text each other when a display is seen, more so for those that have not seen them before and are unsure about what to look for, and when, after dusk.

It's not a predictable phenomena, so this site is probably you're best bet.

I'n not sure if he alerts about NLC's
but Dr. Tony Phillips runs an email and text alert service
from his Spaceweather.com site.
