Sometimes a glitch happens, but it is almost always user-based.

When someone posts a new message, and a delay occurs in geeting back to the 'View your new message' status and refresh, the poster probably becomes impatient and clicks 'Refresh' trying to get to that screen to see their new message. Usually, this means 2 new messages (posts/threads). Therefore, you get 2 e-mails on it. The odd time we have had server-side issues like this, you would have gotten multiple e-mail notifications on the same one topic.

It's just a bottleneck at that moment in time, probably something like too much traffic hammering the server at one time etc.

I'm still getting 2 notifications for pasts made and I dont think the above is the reason. Maybe I'm getting one as a normal user and a second one as mod ??

No, but you could get 2 if you were an admin.

So, for every topic posted in the last 30-odd hours, you have received 2 e-mail notifications to the same e-mail address?

Over the last week or two I'm getting several. sometimes four or five emails per topic. It looks as if it's a case of people getting impatient and clicking submit several times. I've found that over the last while it can take up to two minutes for a post to happen and to be returned to the topic. FWIW this only seems to happen with new topics, not replies

Yea, it's with new topics that the problems are and it's a performance problem on the server. The multiple new topic notifications are people hitting submit a few times because they think (most understandably) that someting must have gone wrong if it takes so long.

Seems IFAS is becoming a victim of it's own success!

That sounds right. I've been deleting duplicate threads more than usual in the past week or so.

We really need to get moved off this server to a permanent home TBH.

I have an idea that might improve things a bit ... will put that into operation when I get the chance.

There is another possibility. When downloading email from a POP3 server you can get two or more copies of the same emails if you set up your client to download more frequently than the server can service your requests.

Some mail clients will only run one download session at a time; however some can run several in parallel because they are designed to connect to multiple accounts. The first download must be allowed to finish, which marks messages on the server as downloaded, before the next download starts otherwise you will receive duplicates. That would be an ISP/mail client problem and not an issue with the IFAS website and can be fixed by reducing the frequency of your mail downloads. However if the mail headers show that two or more messages were indeed sent separately from the website then Seanie's explanation applies.

and now there is a A&S duplicate thread in the product review forum which no one seems to be able to merge...
I think we need to take BBM off as a mod and get some more active people in there.
